AMBLER » A Lansdale business has expanded into Ambler in a move delayed, but not derailed, by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Backyard Beans Coffee Company co-owners Matt and Laura Adams have expanded their business by opening a second coffee shop in downtown Ambler.

Backyard Beans currently has both a coffee packaging operation and a coffee shop in Lansdale.

The Adams first participated with their signature coffee beans in the Ambler Farmers Market in 2015. After being embraced by the community, Matt said they began searching for a space in 2018.

“After we opened Lansdale, we were looking at potential places that we could expand to,” Matt said. “So Ambler just made sense.”

They eventually found their ideal storefront property, which is located at 22 E. Butler Ave. in downtown Ambler.

“We are very much looking forward to working alongside our neighbors in Ambler and contributing to the community here,” Laura said in a statement. “Especially during the pandemic, we’re all working together right now to ensure safety is the highest priority.”

all timeline of the opening of the Ambler location, Matt said. The coronavirus pandemic also affected the new shop’s layout.

Matt noted that the emphasis on takeout, curbside and contactless service went into the overall design. For instance, Matt said the new store has a “modular” coffee bar in order to “increase efficiency of workflow” and create a “more enhanced experience for [the] customer.”

“The pandemic has allowed us to rethink our approach to retail and … what consumer expectations around safe retail will look like for the next 12 to 18 months, and because we had not had the shop open we were able to implement some of those workflow changes, more consumer experience changes into our design of the café.”

The Ambler location will be open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, according to a spokesperson for the coffee company. The kitchen closes at 2 p.m. and the shop will be open for “limited indoor dining and takeout.”

The Ambler shop will have the same food and coffee menu as the Lansdale shop.

“We have a scratch-made kitchen, so we focus on menu items that are fresh, locally-grown, and support our community,” Matt said in a statement. “Our menu changes seasonally to reflect this.”

Backyard Beans Coffee Company created Cafe Ambler, a new blend to celebrate the launch of the coffee shop.

The company also participates in a Make a Difference Monday campaign where 10 percent of café sales on the first Monday

of each month will be donated to a local nonprofit organization.

As the COVID-19 pandemic has rocked the small

business community, mom and pop shop owners like the Adams stressed the importance of shopping small.

“Small businesses are

the backbone of our economy so choosing to support small businesses is choosing to support your neighbors, your community,” Matt said.
