Do better, Reporter

-

I need to say how incredibly disappointed I am with The Reporter. Professional team sports in the United States started back up, and you didn’t even include an article about it.

It was a sport with a marquee event — the World Cup — that drew more fans (both in the United States and the world) than the recent Super Bowl. Look it up if you don’t believe me. While MLB is bragging about being the first “team” sport to come back in the United States, they’re 100 percent wrong.

T National Women’s Soccer League kicked off their tournament, and The Reporter didn’t even bother to cover it or mention it. To pour salt in the wound, under the list of “On the Air Saturday,” you only mentioned one of the two games to be played and got the game time incorrect.

Remember that thing called “Title IX”? “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” Schools are required to have equal opportunities for girls and women. A 1997 study showed that ESPN only dedicated 5 percent of its coverage to women’s sports. A 2015 study showed that women’s sports made up less than 1 percent of coverage on ESPN and

Fox Sports. Apparently that number is still declining, with the Reporter’s current 2020 coverage of 0 percent.

Representation matters. How are women’s sports going to grow if no one is even covering and airing the games? Do better, Reporter. — Courtney Hughes-Plocher/ Vacaville
