One man narrowly escaped harm early Friday while another was struck by a train — and survived.

Just shy of 6 a.m., Suisun City firefighters responded to a report of a train vs. pedestrian situation

at the intersection of Sunset and Railroad avenues.

One man was unharmed, another found a couple hundred feet into Fairfield city limits.

The victim was treated by firefighters, Suisun City police and Medic Ambulance staff.

He had a fractured right arm among other injuries, Suisun City Fire Chief Justin Vincent said, and was stabilized before being transported to NorthBay Medical Center. Because of all the immediate treatment he received, he continued, the victim is expected to survive his injuries.

A preliminary investigation revealed that that the married couple, reportedly transients, were impaired at the time of the accident.

“He and his husband were under the influence of a controlled substance,” Vincent pointed out. “They were walking on the tracks and were unaware of the train.”

When the Union Pacific train neared, one man got out of the way. The other man tried, but was pulled into the train and was struck on his right side, the chief said.

The incident is under investigation by Union Pacific Railroad.

Fire officials remind the public to stay alert, always, around railroad tracks.

“Trains can come from either direction at any time and can be very quiet,” officials cautioned via social media. “Around train tracks or in stations, obey all warning signs and signals and use caution when using headsets or cell phones.”
