Rodriguez 6, Vanden 3

On Monday at Vanden High, the Vikings tasted their first defeat of the season, falling to the visiting Rodriguez Mustangs, 6-3.

Vanden is now 6-1 in MEL play.

The Vikings’ three wins came in singles matches. Sasha Smith won at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-4. Maya Khanna took No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-1, and Camille Arca took No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-0.

“It as another nail-biter today against Rodriguez, but this time fortune did not go our way,” said Vanden coach Stan Lewis. “Rodriguez pulled out the No. 5 singles in a tough threesetter that was won by one point in the third set tie break. The No. 3 doubles won a three-setter to get the fifth win for Rodriguez. We played great today. Rodriguez just played a little better and came up with the big points in the tiebreaks and third sets. It was a really fun competitive match with good sportsmanship by all. The real difference between our first win against them and today’s loss was who won the third sets and tiebreakers.”
