Vanden grabs girls tennis win

The Vanden High girls tennis team improved to 7-1 in Monticello Empire League play with a 7-2 win over Armijo at Vanden on Wednesday.

“We were able to squeeze in the match between the raindrops,” said Vanden coach Stan Lewis. “Our depth was on display today as we were able to win every singles match except for No. 1 and No. 2 in straight sets. We also got strong play out of all three of our doubles teams with straight-set wins.

Delaney Ramsell won No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-3. Jasmine Yabut won No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-3. Paige VanPelt won No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-4, and Camille Arca won No. 6 singles, 6-1 6-4.

Maritza Garcia-Jeanelle Delacruz won No. 1 doubles, 6-1, 6-2. Hailey LamDanali Hardwick won No. 2 doubles, 6-4, 6-4, and Maia Larsen-Kaylani Payne won No. 3 doubles, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).

Armijo got wins at No. 1 singles from Flora Wan, 6-4, 6-0, and at No. 2 singles from Faustina Wan, 6-1, 6-0. The Royals are now 3-5 in MEL play.

Boys golf

VACAVILLE 229, FAIRFIELD INCOMPLETE TEAM >> Vacaville remained undefeated in MEL play (7-0) in a forfeit win over Fairfield, which was only able to field two golfers for the match on a cold afternoon Wednesday at Rancho Solano.

Vacaville had the five lowest scores. The Bulldogs were led by Ben Wilhite, who shot a 40 over the nine holes. He was followed by Dylan Dzierman (41), Jack Mitchell (44), Cody Jensen (47) and Landon Onisko (57).

RODRIGUEZ 263, WILL C. WOOD 285 >> The Mustangs and Wildcats braved cold, rain and some hail at Rancho Solano on Wednesday, with Rodriguez coming out on top, 263 to 285.

Wood fell to 3-3 in MEL play.

Easton Hether of Rodriguez had the low score of 42 for the nine holes, followed by Wood’s Sean Riley (44). The Mustangs’

Will Blair was next with a 45, followed by Wood’s William Booth (51). Rodriguez’s Kieran Skaalen (54) and Aidan Nelson (56) were next, followed by the Wildcats Nick Talavera (57) and Joshua Reed (63). Next were Heath Maritz (66) of Rodriguez and Clayton Young (70) of Wood.

Boys cross country

WOOD 15, VANDEN INCOMPLETE >> The Will C. Wood boys cross country team picked up a win by forfeit on Wednesday at Vanden, who did not field a complete team.

In the three-mile race, Vanden’s Isaac Benitez won in 17 minutes, 21 seconds. Wood’s Evan Smith was second (18:09) and teammate Dezso Ganoza (18:26) finished third. Vanden’s Isaiah Forest (18:28) was next, followed by Wood’s Angelo Johnson (18:56), Zane Johnson (19:11) and Dakota Friend (19:22).

“Vanden graciously offered to host as the Lagoon Valley Park course was slick with mud,” said Wood head coach Ray

Hausler. “We’re grateful for the opportunit­y to race on their fun, flat and fast course at Vanden. Our athletes enjoyed the opportunit­y to get out and be fast. Evan has been coming along. I’m hoping he’ll fall in love with running over the next year. Dezso had a huge breakout performanc­e today with a personal record by over threeand-a-half minutes.”

Girls cross country

WOOD 15, VANDEN INCOMPLETE >> The Wildcats won by forfeit, as Vanden was unable to field a complete squad.

Wood’s Tea Troche Jones (19:46) and Kaydence Garrison (19:48) finished first and second, followed by Vanden’s Mariessa McLaughlin (20:47) and Wood’s Diana Luu (22:12), Emma Howard (22:22) and Carina Tupy (22:39).

“Tea and Kaydence have been working hard together and they had a great time today running under 20 minutes for three miles,” said Wood head coach Ray Hausler.
