A teacher at Golden Hills Educational Center in Vacaville and a college and career development specialist for the Solano County Office of Education (SCOE) have been named as the top Educators of the Year for SCOE, officials announced in a news release.

Ron Major is SCOE’s teacher of the tear, and Sheila Vogel is SCOE’s classified employee of the year. Both were selected by SCOE’s nomination committee which annually chooses “two employees who work passionately to contribute to student achievement, educational innovation, and advance community involvement in schools,” according to the release.

“The Educators of the Year program is designed to reflect the rich diversity of Solano County’s school employees, while paying tribute to Solano’s teaching force, the growing complexity of challenges that confront our schools and the need to promote collaboration and teamwork among educators to meet those challenges,” officials wrote.

Major is a teacher at Golden Hills Educational Center, where he serves on the site council and leadership team. In this capacity, officials wrote that he provides “unique insight and expertise toward improving student experiences.”

“Ron is known for going above and beyond for his students, and on occasion has provided groceries and clothing for students in need,” officials wrote. “Ron is a problem solver and a dynamic, friendly, equityfocused teacher who carefully designs his lessons to meet the needs and challenges of all his students.”

As a college and career specialist for SCOE, Vogel provides assistance for students enrolled in the Fairfield-Suisun Adult School’s Adult Program, including preparing them for employment and helping them find jobs.

“Shelia respects the goals and desires of the youth and adults she serves and champions their successes with enthusiasm and heart,” officials wrote. “Amid the COVID restrictions, she was adamant about virtual small group/individual meetings to stay connected with her students.”

Lisette Estrella-Henderson, Solano County superintendent of schools, praised the work of Major and Vogel as well as that of all its staff.

“SCOE is extremely fortunate to have so many incredible certificated and classified employees who exemplify leadership and deliver essential support to our students, their families, and schools,” she said. “Congratulations and appreciation to Ron and Shelia for their dedication to educating our youth!”

Both Major and Vogel will represent SCOE in the county’s annual Educators of the Year celebration, which will also honor certificated and classified employees in districts throughout Solano.

The top teacher and classified employee will advance to the state program. Solano recipients will be announced during the virtual ceremony at 3:30 p.m. on April 27.
