Wood wins MEL volleyball league opener over Armijo

On its home court on Wednesday, the Will C. Wood girls volleyball team downed the Armijo Royals in four sets, 25-11, 14-25, 2524, 25-23.

It was the first Monticello Empire League match forbothtea­ms.

“We are super excited to be back on the court competing,” said Wood first-year coach Paige McConlogue. “Tonight we came out serving super tough and getting Armijoouto­fsystem.”

Jaiden Austin served seven aces for the Wildcats and teammate Hannah DelRio had a big net presence with five blocks. Setters Cristina Collazo and Kennedy Morgan moved the ball around well in combining for 30 assists.

Taylor Ford led the Wood offense with nine kills, while libero Julia Meek led thedefense­with12digs.

The Wildcat junior varsity swept the Royal JV in straight sets.

“I really enjoyed my first game as a Wildcat,” said McConlogue, who came to Wood after coaching at Armijo for several years, “and I’m looking forward to the upcoming season.”

Wood hosts Rodriguez on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Boys Swimming VACAVILLE 101, ARMIJO 9 >>

Vacaville’s Jack Cook won the 200 freestyle in one minute, 54.88 seconds and the backstroke in 1:03.3 in a match against Armijo.

Teammate Will Bulris won the individual medley in 2:05.35 and the 100-meter breaststro­ke in 1:07.56.

The Bulldogs’ Zach Moore won the 50-meter freestyle in 25.37 and the 100 freestyle in 59.6.

Vacaville’s Hunter Ray took the 100 fly in 1:05.19.

Ben Thiessen, Bulris Ray and Cook teamed up to win the 200-meter medley in 2:17.06, while Cook, Ray, Bulris and Moore won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:42.56.

Girls Swimming VACAVILLE 115, ARMIJO 13 >>

Vacaville’s Alex Bulris won the 200-meter individual relay in 2:17.8 and the 100 fly in 1:03.18 in the varsity girls division against Armijo.

Gioia won the 50 free in 28.04 and 100 breast in 1:23.47.

Vacaville’s Salome Massola-Carmelich took the 200 free in 2:12.35 and the 100 back in 1:04.94 and teammate Mia Gladney won the 100 free in 1:05.22.

Salome Massola-Carmelich, Natalie Broadley, Bulris and Gioia won the 200 medley in 2:05.3. The same foursome won the 200 free relay in 1.52.09.
