Vacaville High girls volleyball defeats Will C. Wood in MEL play

The Vacaville High girls volleyball team defeated host Will C. Wood 25-10, 25-17. 17-25, 25-13 on Tuesday in Monticello Empire League play.

“Crosstown rival matches are a lot of fun,” said Vacaville head coach Ashley Chappell. “There were some great rallies with awesome plays. We look forward to playing Wood again at home next Wednesday.”

Emma Johnson ran the Bulldog offense with 57 sets. She was 13-for-15 serving with five aces and three kills. Sammy Brown was 15-for-17 serving and led the attack with six kills. Lili Ayala put up eight solid blocks. Jordyn Moriarty led the defense with nine digs.

“I like the fight in my team,” said Wood head coach Paige McConlogue.

“We gave up some crucial momentum points. Middle Hannah Del Rio had a big presence tonight with seven kills and five solo blocks. Cristina Collazo led our team with 20 assists. Julia Meek led us defensivel­y with 20 digs. It was a big night for Julia, as she put herself in position well.”

Vacaville hosts Vanden on Thursday at 5 p.m. VANDEN 3, RODRIGUEZ 2 >> In a close match at Rodriguez High on Tuesday, the Vikings overcame the Mustangs, 25-15, 25-22, 17-25, 19-25, 15-6.

Vanden is now 4-1 in MEL play.

“We started out playing a controlled game the first two sets,” said Vanden assistant coach Christophe­r Co. “The Mustangs mounted a great offense that took us out of our game. But in the last set the team composed themselves with a huge boost from our seniors — Rachel Lin’s service run and Samantha Carelock’s defensive and offensive contributi­on — to give us a lead that helped us finish strong.”

Lin was 31-for-34 serving with nine aces, five kills and four digs. Audrey Alexander went 14-for-17 serving with six aces and 13 digs, while team captain Carelock had 20 kills and four blocks.

Junior varsity volleyball VANDEN 2, RODRIGUEZ 0 >>

The Vikings won 25-9, 25-6 to improve to 5-0 in league play.

Breanna Davis served 12-for-12 for Vanden with a kill, four digs and seven assists. Sumerlyn Spencer was 12-for-12 serving with five aces and five kills. Makenzie Lovell went 8-for-8 serving with three aces and five digs. Anaya Thrower contribute­d seven kills and three blocks.

Badminton VACAVILLE 9, WILL C. WOOD 0 >>

At Vacaville High on Tuesday, the home team won eight singles matches in straight sets and one by forfeit.

Singles winners for the Bulldogs were Katelyn Crismon, Emily Pehl, Nia Macay, Sierra HIgdon, Stephanie Esquivel, Vicky Li, Aubree Rose and Morgan Sweeney.

Vacaville is now 3-2 in MEL play.
