Vacaville, Armijo grab titles at MEL tennis finals

Vacaville, Vanden and Armijo high school tennis players highlighte­d the final day of the Monticello Empire League finals on Thursday.

In the singles final, Nia Macay from Vacaville defeated Vanden’s Maya Khanna 6-1, 6-4 to grab the MEL title for 2021.

Both players will move on to play at the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II tournament next Thursday at Johnson Ranch in Roseville.

In the MEL doubles final, Faustina and Flora Wan from Armijo won the title with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Vanden’s .Sasha Smith and Delaney Ramsell.

Both the Wan sisters and Smith/Ramsell will advance the the section tournament next Thursday.

Smith and Ramsell beat Rodriguez in the quarterfin­als and semifinals to advance to the final.

Girls Volleyball

CENTRAL CATHOLIC 3, VANDEN0>> The Vanden High School girls volleyball team’s season came to an end on Thursday as visiting Central Catholic beat the Vikings 25-18, 26-24, 25-23 in the second round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III bracket.

Breanna Davis was 19for-20 at the line and added 23 assists and 11 digs for the No. 4-seeded Vikings (20-8). Sumerlyn Spencer was 15-for-16 at the line and Audrey Alexander was 7-for-7 at the line and added 20 digs.

Soleil Sands had 13 kills, Lauren Whyte had nine spikes and Anaya Thrower had eight kills and three blocks. Jada Cuffie had five kills. Francesca King added 14 assists.

Cross country

FALCONS GRAB BOTH MVPS >> TheVacavil­leChristia­nHigh varsity boys and girls teams both grabbed MVP nods after the two teams won Sierra Delta League titles.

The MVP on the boys side was Chris Lespron and the girls MVP was Katrina Husby.

The girls had three others on the first team — Kara Krulick, Laura Everett and Cate Ferreira.

The boys had three more first-teamers — Maverick Adam, Aaron Laxamana and Apollo Adam.
