Vanden High baseball team grabs top seed in Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs

The Vanden High baseball team nabbed the top seed for the upcoming SacJoaquin Section playoffs in Division III as brackets were released on Saturday.

The Vikings (24-3) who grabbed the Monticello Empire League's top spot on Thursday, host No. 16 Beyer in the first round on Tuesday.

Vanden was one of four teams from the MEL to make the postseason. Rodriguez, Vacaville and Armijo were the others.

Vacaville is a No. 9 seed in the Division I bracket and will travel to River City of West Sacramento on Tuesday.

Vacaville Christian is a No. 6 seed in D-7 and is at Woodland Christian on Wednesday.

Buckingham Charter is a No. 7 seed in D-6 and will travel to Mariposa on Wednesday.

Softball Vanden 5, Will C. Wood 1

The Will C. Wood High softball team couldn't fend off Vanden, 5-1, on Friday, in MEL play.

Going into the bottom of the third, the Vikings led 3-0 when the Wildcats (9-12, 7-10) score their lone run of the game. The Vikings (17-0, 14-0) manage to score two runs in the following two innings, and held the Wildcats for the rest of the game to remain undefeated.

The Vikings were led offensivel­y by sophomore Mia Zabat, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI.

The Vikings finish up competitio­n in the MEL when they host Rodriguez at home Wednesday.

The Wildcats aim to bounce back when they finish up their regular season on the road against the Vacaville

Bulldogs.

Vacaville 17, Fairfield 7

In front of their home crowd on Friday, the Vacaville High softball team overwhelme­d the Fairfield Falcons, 17-7.

In the first four innings of play, the Bulldogs (1312, 7-7) outscored the Falcons 15-1. After Fairfield (718, 0-14 score six runs in the top of the fifth, the Bulldogs secured their win with two more runs in the bottom of the inning, ending the game via mercy rule.

The Bulldogs were led offensivel­y by freshman Hayden Kyne, who hit a grand slam. Sophomore Taylor Elberhart had a home run as well on a 2-for-4 day, knocking in two runs and scoring twice.

Baseball Buckingham 20, Sacramento Country Day 0

The Buckingham Charter High baseball team entered the weekend victorious when they defeated the Sacramento Country Day Cavaliers, 20-0 in Sacramento Metropolit­an Athletic League play.

After scoring nine runs in the bottom of the first, the Knights (6-11, 5-5) continued to put the pressure on the Cavaliers (011, 0-10) by scoring four in the second, followed by six in the third. One more insurance run in the bottom of the fourth secure their win after the game was called in the top of the fifth inning via the mercy rule. Knights senior Dylan Kosar pitched a no-hitter in five innings, striking out ten and walking one.

Offensivel­y, the Knights were led by senior Brayden Janecki, who knocked four runs in on a 4-for-4 day with one home run on the day. Kosar, Ethan Bline and junior Diego Delgado all earned three RBIs.
