Vanden baseball breezes past Beyer

Vaca High baseball team wins on the road at River City

The No. 1 seeded Vanden High baseball team defeated No.16 Beyer, 12-1, on Tuesday in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III playoffs.

The Vikings struck early in the bottom of the first when they scored five runs in the first, followed by six runs in the second. One more run in the third only extended their lead even more, holding on to a 12-0 lead for the next few innings.

The Patriots' (7-17) lone run came in the top of the fifth inning, but the Vikings (26-3) secured the win, moving to the next round.

The Vikings were led offensivel­y by senior Erick Diez, who went 1-for-1 with a triple, knocking in three runs. Fellow seniors Darryl Dilworth Jr. (2-for-3, two RBIs) and Tyler James (2-for3, RBI) each hit a home run.

On the mound, senior Wesley Smith (three innings) and junior Jovan Ochoa (two innings) held the Patriots at bay, combining to allow just three hits, three walks and six strikeouts.

The Vikings are set to now host No. 8 seed Roseville on Thursday in the second round. VACAVILLE 8, RIVER CITY 2 >> In the opening round of the Sac-Joaquin Sectional D-I playoffs, the No. 9-seeded Vacaville baseball team returned home victorious Tuesday with an 8-2 road win against No. 8 River City.

The Bulldogs (15-14) struck first in the top of the third, beginning with a one run lead. The score remained the same until the top of the seventh inning, when the Bulldogs rallied, scoring seven runs to extend their lead to eight. The Raiders (21-7) scored two in the bottom of the inning, but the Bulldogs fended them off for the win.

The Bulldogs were led offensivel­y by junior Nathan Schnell, who went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Junior Lawrence Westbrook went 3-for-4, knocking in one.

On the mound, senior Aidan Russell earned the win after five innings of pitching, allowing four hits and two strikeouts.

The Bulldogs are set to return on the road when they take on top-seeded seed Franklin on Thursday.
