Fiesta car show draws fans

Vintage Chevrolets, Fords and a host of vehicles from other automakers drew crowds Saturday to downtown Vacaville for the 20th annual Fiesta Days Car Show.

All along East Main Street from Davis Street to Wilson Street classic cars, trucks and motorcycles commanded the scene. Men, women and children, several of the latter in strollers, tooled around the area, awestruck by the beauty of the automobiles on display.

Adding to the fun were performers from Live Music Center and Fiesta pageant winners taking in the view.

Rodrigo Rivera of Fairfield came with his wife and a young son. The family made frequent stops to peer at the wide selection of vintage vehicles, oohing and ahhing at their pristine condition. “It's awesome to be here,” Rodrigo said. He had worked the night before and literally got just a bit of sleep, waking after barely resting to spend quality time with his family.

An affinity for automobiles, it seems, is a family thing, and this car show was no exception. “It's so beautiful. We love it,” he emphasized. Nearby, Frostie Torres sat near a friend occupying a blue-and-white 1955 Chevy on display.

“It's great. We're happy to bring our cars,” she said from her perch on a wheelchair. She pointed out that the friends and their husbands have long complemented each other.

“We went to school together, and our husbands went to school together and now we have matching cars,” Torres added.

Her vehicle, a silver-and-white 1955 Chevy, sat nearby.

Across the way at the CreekWalk and in Andrews Park, Fiesta festivities were in full swing.

The fun continues today, Hispanic Day, from 11 a.m. That's when a mass at the CreekWalk stage, performed by Father Berg and including music by a mariachi band, kicks off the day.

At noon, Folklorico Juvenil Danzantes Unidos will dance and the Fiesta Garden, Jailhouse and concession stands will open. A highlight will be the jalapeno- and onion-eating contest at 3 p.m.

On Monday, the final day of Fiesta, events will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Musical performances begin at 10 a.m., with the Fiesta Garden, Jailhouse and concessions

opening an hour later.

Get your final Fiesta corn dog, funnel cake and other treats, as they won't be offered again until next year.
