Williams, Timm may head toward runoff
With all precincts reporting but many mailin ballots still to be counted, the race for the Solano County Board of Supervisors' 3rd District appears to be poised to continue through November but with two candidates instead of five.
The latest round of results posted before midnight Wednesday showed two candidates leading by sizable margins: Suisun City Councilwoman Wanda Williams and Fairfield City Councilman Chuck Timm. However, since no candidate has received more than 50% of the vote, the election appears to be headed toward a runoff in November.
Williams has held steady at top with 33.09% of the vote. She said she is waiting until every ballot is counted to make an official statement but is grateful of where the numbers stand at the moment.
“I feel really good about the direction,” she said. “I'm very thankful for everyone that has helped me this far to get to this point and that I was able to earn their trust and their vote. At the end of the day, it's about the people and how I can best serve them.”
Williams also said it has been a privilege to be in a contest with other candidates who “care about the community as well.”
Following closely behind was Timm at 29.10%. He is also waiting for the final results to come in but does not anticipate a change in the standings.
“The trend is obvious,” he said. “The trend continued upwards, and Wanda and I were still incrementally still moving kind of up together.” Timm was happy with the results so far. “We'll wait and see,” he said. “I anticipate it will end up the way it is now.”
The next highest vote-getters were former Suisun City Mayor Pete Sanchez at 17.04%, former legislative staffer Jennifer Barton at 14.17% and former correctional officer Joe Joyce at 6.31%.
Joyce said he was disappointed with the outcome and low voter turnout but still maintained hope for a better showing.
“I'm still hopeful that there's some more ballots out there that I don't end up dead last, but I'm actually really disappointed in the overall totals of the vote,” he said. “I actually thought that we had a lot more momentum.”
Joyce said he has no immediate plans except to support candidates taking on entrenched incumbents in races throughout the county.
“I truly believe that citizens got to get their voices back,” he said.
The results so far are based on more than 38,000 mail-in ballots counted and
7,045 in-person ballots. The county still has to process approximately 22,600 mailin ballots and 429 provisional ballots.
The 3rd District consists of all of Suisun City as well as the bulk of Fairfield, including Cordelia, Suisun Valley and Travis Air Force
Base. The seat is currently occupied by Jim Spering, who has served since 2006 and is retiring at the end of his term in January.
