Agnes J. Sweeney of Thorndale

Agnes J. Sweeney (nee McKay), age 83 of Thorndale, died of heart failure on Thursday May 11, 2017 at Chester County Hospital. Agnes was the daughter of the late Mary J. McKay and the wife of Francis H. Sweeney with whomshe shared 60 years of marriage.

Born in 1934, Agnes grew up in Norristown. She married Francis in 1957 and moved to Philadelph­ia around 1961; for the next 25 years, they raised their family on Gerhard Street in Roxborough as parishione­rs of St. John the Baptist, Manayunk. For the past 31 years, the couple has resided in Thorndale, Chester County.

Agnes attended Norristown High School. A homemaker and mother of five, she also worked part time as a waitress for various restaurant­s including The Bird Cage at Lord & Taylor, Bala Cynwyd. Agnes was a member of St. Joseph Church in Downingtow­n. She enjoyed art, making crafts, reading and bird watch- ing, but her favorite pastime was spending time with her grandchild­ren and children.

In addition to her husband Francis, she is survived by her five children Michael (Patricia), Neil (Teresa), Nora Sweeney (Jim Sharp), Maureen Sweeney and Christine Richardson. She is also survived by her grandchild­ren Michael Sweeney, Kelsey Richardson, Frances Sweeney, Megan Sweeney, Luke Richardson and Sophie Sharp, her sister Elaine Goodman (Bill) and sister-in-law Gloria McKay and her son Scott (Elisa). She was pre- deceased by her brother Edward McKay.

A Mass of Christian Burial celebratin­g her life was held on Thursday May 18, 2017 at St. Joseph Church in Downingtow­n with the Rev. Monsignor Joseph McLoone presiding.

Interment was private. In lieu of flowers, contributi­ons inher memory can be made to: Downingtow­n Library 122 Wallace Ave, Downingtow­n PA 19335.
