A press release from the Roxborough High School Sports Hall of Fame

Editor’s note: This is the last of five profiles on the Class of 2018 inductees into the Roxborough High School Sports Hall of Fame.

ROXBOROUGH » Jonathan Barnes will be among the latest group of inductees into the Roxborough High School Hall of Fame.

Barnes was a member of the Class of 1980.

When he entered Roxborough in September of 1978, Barnes helped create the finest lightweight wrestling lineup in the Public League. After an outstanding junior year at 19-1, he went undefeated in his senior season. He was also captain of an exceptional Roxborough team.

In both 1979 and 1980, Barnes won the Public League Individual Championship Tournament and was also named the Tournament Outstanding Wrestler in both years. This equated to FirstTeam All-Public in both 1979 and 1980 in the lightweight division.

After graduation, Barnes continued to wrestle at Montgomery County Community College and then Drexel University. His fondest memories of wrestling are running steps, tournaments and wrestlerettes. After his college wrestling endeavors, he buried his wrestling career and became a funeral director.

This year’s induction banquet will be held at Flourtown Country Club, 150 McCloskey Road, Flourtown, Thursday, March 22. A cash bar reception will be at 6 p.m., with dinner to follow at 7 p.m.

There also will be a reception to honor the inductees in the school library at noon March 22.
