Perez's ninth-inning HR lifts Royals over Yankees

Salvador Perez hit a three-run homer off Allstar closer Clay Holmes in the ninth inning, and the Kansas City Royals beat the New York Yankees 8-6 Sunday at Yankee Stadium.

New York overcame a 4-0 deficit and took a 6-4 lead when Anthony Rizzo hit a three-run homer into the right field second deck in the seventh off Dylan Coleman.

Hunter Dozier homered against Ron Marinaccio leading off the eighth to cut it to 6-5.

Holmes (5-2) then blew a save for just the third time in 20 chances.

Whit Merrifield walked with one out. Bobby Witt Jr. was hit on the hand with a pitch, forcing him from the game. Kyle Isbel pinch-ran.

Perez, who struck out twice and popped out in his first three at-bats, drove a 1-2 sinker 441 feet into Monument Park behind the center-field wall. It was the first homer allowed this year by Holmes, who was facing his 181st batter.

PADRES 3, TWINS 2 » Jurickson Profar homered for the second straight game and had a hand in the go-ahead rally as host San Diego took two out of three from AL Central-leading Minnesota.

Sean Manaea (6-5), who overcame home runs by Luis Arraez and Jose Miranda, allowed two runs and four hits in six innings, struck out seven and walked three to win it.

Profar homered off Dylan Bundy (6-5) with two outs in the third for a 1-0 lead. Bundy gave up three runs, four hits and no walks in five-plus innings.

The Padres took the lead while chasing Bundy in the sixth. Trent Grisham and Profar opened with consecutiv­e singles. Emilio Pagan entered, and after Manny Machado lined out to center, Jake Cronenwort­h singled in the tying run and Luke Voit singled in the goahead run.

GIANTS 4, CUBS 0 » Carlos Rodón struck out 10 over seven dominant innings and San Francisco blanked visiting Chicago.

Rodón (9-6) got help from his defense early. Left fielder Luis Gonzalez reached over the outfield wall to snare Christophe­r Morel’s leadoff drive, and center fielder Austin Slater made a running grab of Nelson Velazquez’s hardhit ball an inning later.

Then Rodón took over. He fanned two in the second inning, then struck out the side in the third and fourth. He yielded two hits, none after the third inning.

The Giants scored all their runs in the fourth inning by rallying with two outs against Adrian Sampson (0-2). Eighth-place hitter Jason Vosler roped a two-run single, followed by No. 9 hitter Austin Wynns’ two-run double.

ASTROS 3, MARINERS 2, 10 INNINGS » Yordan Alvarez hit an RBI single with one out in the bottom of the 10th to lift Houston over Seattle.

Mauricio Dubón started the 10th as the automatic runner and the Mariners intentiona­lly walked Jose Altuve. Dubón went to third on a fly ball by Yuli Gurriel.

Alvarez then laced a grounder off Brennan Bernardino (0-1), who was making his MLB debut, to left field to send Dubón home.

The Astros scored two runs in the first to take the lead. The Mariners used a two-run homer by Jesse Winker in the eighth to tie it.

BRAVES 1, DIAMONDBAC­KS 0 » Austin Riley hit a runscoring double off Mark Melancon in the bottom of the ninth, giving Atlanta a victory over Arizona and a three-game series sweep.

Max Fried, Dylan Lee and Kenley Jansen (5-0) combined on a four-hitter for the Braves, who are 39-14 since June 1, the best record in the majors over that span.

Matt Olson singled with one out in the ninth against Melancon (3-9) and scored when Riley’s double hit the fence in right-center.

Fried allowed four hits and two walks with five strikeouts in seven innings.

Arizona’s Merrill Kelly gave up three hits and two walks in seven innings with eight strikeouts,

METS 9, MARLINS 3 » Francisco Lindor had three hits and New York pounded Pablo López and host Miami to sweep the threegame series.

Jeff Mcneil singled twice and doubled, and Mark Canha also had three hits for the NL East leaders, who won their sixth straight and finished with 19 hits — 12 of them against López.

The Marlins lost their seventh straight at home.

The Mets built a 6-0 lead against López, chasing the right-hander after 2 2/3 innings. López (7-6) struck out one in his shortest start of the season.

PHILLIES 8, PIRATES 2 » Alec Bohm fell a triple shy of the cycle, tying a career high with four hits in a win for Philadelph­ia that completed a four-game sweep at Pittsburgh.

Bohm hit his seventh homer of the season in the sixth, a solo shot that gave him four hits on just five pitches and extended Philadelph­ia’s lead to seven runs.

Aaron Nola (7-8) allowed one run and six hits with eight strikeouts in six innings.

Philadelph­ia had 18 hits to win its fifth straight and hand Pittsburgh a seventh straight loss.

CARDINALS 5, NATIONALS 0 » Paul Dejong homered for the second straight day after ending a minor league demotion, Andre Pallante pitched into the ninth inning and St. Louis beat host Washington.

An All-star in 2019, Dejong was demoted to Triple-a Memphis in May after hitting .130 with one home run in 24 games.

Dejong homered in his return to the majors Saturday, then connected again in the sixth inning Sunday against Jordan Weems.

Pallante (4-4) allowed five hits in eight-plus innings.

BLUE JAYS 4, TIGERS 1 » Matt Chapman hit a two-run homer and Toronto topped visiting Detroit.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette had RBI doubles for the Blue Jays, who have won 12 of 15 overall.

José Berríos (8-4) allowed three hits in seven innings, including a solo homer to Javier Báez. Berríos walked one and struck out six.

WHITE SOX 4, ATHLETICS 1 » José Abreu and Eloy Jiménez homered, Dylan Cease threw six strong innings and Chicago defeated Oakland at home.

Cease (11-4) allowed a run and four hits, striking out seven and walking one in winning his fourth straight start.

GUARDIANS 5, RAYS 3 » Austin Hedges had a tiebreakin­g two-run single in the fifth to help Cleveland beat All-star Game starter Shane Mcclanahan and host Tampa Bay.

Mcclanahan (10-4) gave up five runs, seven hits and three walks with four strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings.
