Atwell had his best camp practice of the summer and received a shoutout from Mcvay in his podium interview.
The 5-foot-9 Atwell made an impact by making plays in the middle of the field with Wolford and quarterback Bryce Perkins. The Rams drafted Atwell in the second round last year to stretch the field, something that hasn’t occurred because of Atwell’s injury setbacks, but Monday was a good sign of him developing as an allaround receiver.
“I think opportunities,” Mcvay said about why Atwell stood out Monday. “I think really you just look at being intentional about making sure that we get some plays and some things that he does well off. I thought he came and he was ready to go.”
Perkins gave Atwell an opportunity to flash his speed on a deep ball, but he was unable to get enough separation and it led to an interception for cornerback Robert Rochell. Rams offensive coordinator Liam Coen is optimistic about Atwell becoming a deep threat.
“A guy that obviously can stretch the field vertically right now,” Coen said. “He is a guy that (has) elite speed, can track the football, does a great job catching the football away from his body.”
Wagner's pick 6
The highlight play of Monday’s practice was middle linebacker Bobby Wagner jumping a few feet in the air for an interception and running down the sideline for a touchdown.
“Oh, man, that was a great play,” cornerback David Long said. “Bobby’s just been doing a lot of great things. He’s been a great addition to the defense. As great of a play as it was, like once I saw who it was … I expect him to make those plays.”
