Red-hot Cardinals finish off sweep of skidding Yankees

Nolan Arenado and Paul Dejong both homered and drove in four runs to help the St. Louis Cardinals outlast the visiting New York Yankees 12-9 on Sunday, completing a three-game sweep.

St. Louis won its seasonhigh seventh straight in a slugfest that took 4 hours, 25 minutes — the longest nine-inning game in the majors this season.

DJ Lemahieu homered for the Yankees, who have lost five in a row but still have the AL’S best record.

St. Louis (60-48) moved a season-best 12 games over .500. The surging Cardinals moved two games ahead of second-place Milwaukee in the NL Central.

Arenado, who launched a three-run homer in the second inning, had three hits and leads the majors with 18 RBIS in interleagu­e games this season.

Dejong, who broke a 6-all tie with a fifth-inning double, added a three-run drive in the eighth inning.

Aaron Judge drove in four runs for the Yankees, bringing his Al-leading total to 97 RBIS.

Frankie Montas struggled in his Yankees debut. Acquired from Oakland on Monday, the right-hander allowed six earned runs, five hits and three walks over three innings.

METS 5, BRAVES 2 » Jacob degrom struck out 12 and carried a perfect game into the sixth inning of his second start all season, pitching New York past visiting Atlanta for its 12th victory in 14 games.

Mckenzie (8-8) retired 15 straight hitters before pinch-hitter Kyle Tucker walked with one out in the eighth. Pinch-hitter Jose Altuve then bounced into an inning-ending double play.

Mckenzie walked one and threw 91 pitches.

Maile’s fifth-inning homer off Christian Javier landed on the home run porch in left field for his first homer since May 20, 2019.

Javier (6-8) gave up six hits, struck out four and didn’t walk a batter over six innings.

With the game scoreless in the ninth, Isaac Parades hit a one-out single off Tigers closer Gregory Soto (2-6), then took third on a two-out double by Francisco Mejia. Soto walked Jose Siri to load the bases, then missed on a 3-2 pitch to Yu Chang.

Soto walked Yandy Diaz, his fifth batter of the inning, to make it 2-0.

Jason Foley replaced Soto and allowed a two-run single to Brandon Lowe, a two-run double by Randy Arozarena and an RBI single by Roman Quinn.

ROYALS 11, RED SOX 5 » Rookie MJ Melendez hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning and had six RBIS to help host Kansas City rout Boston.

The 7-8-9 hitters of Michael Massey, Nate Eaton and Kyle Isbel went a combined 6-for-9 with nine runs scored and five RBIS.
