Lake Norconian 5K raises funds for scholarships, community projects
More than 250 runners and walkers participated in the Norco Kiwanis Club’s 12th Lake Norconian 5K Run/walk, held this fall at Lake Norconian in Norco.
Because of the coronavirus pandemic, this was the first time the event had been held since 2019, according to a news release.
The run started and ended at the Norco College parking lot on Third Street, and Key Club students from Norco High School, John F. Kennedy Middle College High School, Eleanor Roosevelt High School and Santiago High School checked in the participants and provided them with bibs and T-shirts.
Before the run, staff from Wicked Pilates & Fitness provided warmups, and the Norco High School Sea Cadets presenting the colors for the Pledge of Allegiance. The Sea Cadets also assisted with escorting participants around Lake Norconian.
The Norco Kiwanis Club holds the event to raise money for scholarships and to support community projects.
The club has established the Terrific Kids recognition program at Riverview Elementary School, Highland Elementary School and Vandermolen Fundamental Elementary School. At Riverview, the club also sponsors a monthly HERO Lunch with the Principal program to recognize and encourage student excellence.
The Norco Kiwanis Club also supports studentled Key Clubs a Norco High School and John F. Kennedy Middle College High School.
The club provides food to the needy at Thanksgiving and adopts families and distributes Christmas gifts in December. It is also one of the three founders of the Corona-norco Day of the Child.
The Norco Kiwanis Club meets 7 a.m. Wednesdays and at noon the first Friday of the month in the community room at Cowgirl Café, 2859 Hamner Ave., Norco.
