Cocktail with a cause

To honor International Women’s Day, Wednesday, Eureka! restaurants have introduced a new cocktail and are using it to raise money for a women’s charity.

Gilding the Lily features Uncle Nearest 1856 whiskey, blood orange, ginger, lemon, egg white, orange bitters and cinnamon.

The cocktail, created by Eureka! Santa Barbara bartender Sunna Thorkelsdottir, is inspired by Joy Perrine, a pioneering female bartender best known for creating bourbon-based cocktails during a time when adding anything to whiskey was considered “gilding the lily,” according to a news release.

Uncle Nearest is a female-led distillery whose name honors the first African American master distiller, Nathan “Nearest” Green.

Through April 4, $1 from each Gilding the Lily cocktail sold will be donated to Women for Women International, a nonprofit humanitarian organization that provides practical and moral support to female survivors of war.

Eureka! has locations in Redlands, Claremont, Ontario and Indian Wells.
