Concert for children will include audience participation

The Claremont Young Musicians Orchestra, conducted by Kyle Dickson, will present a concert for children at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bridges Hall of Music on the Pomona College campus, 150 E. Fourth St., Claremont.

The concert will feature “The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra” by Benjamin Britten, narrated by actor William Christian. The piece introduces the audience to every section of the orchestra.

The program also includes the “William Tell Overture” by Giochino Rossini and the overture to “Ruslan and Ludmilla” by Mikhail Glinka, among other pieces.

The concert includes audience participation and prizes for everyone, according to a news release.

Admission is free, and doors open at 10:30 a.m. when an eightmember string ensemble will perform in the lobby.

William Christian, who will narrate “The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra,” appeared on the daytime television drama “All My Children” as Officer Derek Frye for 15 years and received an Emmy nomination, according to the news release. He has also appeared on “Good Girls,” “Hannah Montana” “How to Get Away With Murder,” among others.

His theater credits include the Off-broadway revivals of “A Member of the Wedding” and “The Boys in the Band.”

With the Los Angeles Philharmonic he has narrated the text in Haydn’s “The Last Seven Words of Christ” and with the Aspen Music Festival, he has narrated text for Beethoven’s “Egmont.” He has also narrated “A Visit From St. Nicholas with the Boston Pops Orchestra.

For the Claremont Young Musicians Orchestra’s children’s concerts, he has narrated “Peter and the Wolf” and “Casey at the Bat” and has played President Abraham Lincoln for Aaron Copland’s “Lincoln Portrait” and composers Leonard Bernstein, Sergei Prokofiev and Mikhail Glinka.
