GAME REPORT

- — Doug Padilla

THE GAME: One day after they were held scoreless through seven innings, the Dodgers were shut down again in a 1-0loss to the Oakland A’s on Thursday in Mesa, Ariz. PITCHING REPORT: Ryan Pepiot threw three scoreless innings in his start, matching the three scoreless innings from Michael Grove on Wednesday. Pepiot or Grove could be selected to pitch during the first turn in the rotation when the regular season starts, as Tony Gonsolin nurses a left ankle sprain. ... Left-hander Victor Gonzalez, who was limited to 13minor league games last season because of an elbow injury, gave up a run in one inning after giving up four runs in an inning of his Cactus League debut. … Tayler Scott, Phil Bickford, Wander Suero and Adam Kolarek each pitched a scoreless inning. HITTING REPORT: In his first atbat when he was finally allowed to swing a bat, Miguel Vargas ripped a double to left-center field in the first inning. Vargas entered with 12plate appearances and had four walks, good for a .333on-base percentage, even though he wasn’t allowed to swing because of a hairline fracture in his right pinky finger. “I didn’t expect that today but I’m seeing the ball well, I feel better and baseball happened,” said Vargas, who added that he is comfortable on defense at second base. “I was happy to get that double.” ... J.D. Martinez hit a one-hopper off the right field wall in the sixth inning, but was held to a single and still does not have an extra-base hit this spring.

FIELDING REPORT: Jason Heyward showed he continues to have his outfield range, as well as an ability to handle adversity, when he moved back on a ball to the edge of the warning track in center field during the third inning and made a catch while also fighting off the glare of the sun. ... With runners at second and third base, third baseman Jorbit Vivas charged a slow grounder from Pablo Reyes and threw just in time to first base for the final out of the seventh inning.
