Church offers seminars on ‘Dealing With Aging’
Craig Walker, pastor emeritus of Desert Congregational Church of Twentynine Palms and a member of First Congregational Church of Redlands, will present a series of 10 free seminars on “Dealing With Aging,” beginning Sunday.
The classes will meet at 10:45 a.m. one Sunday each month through December in the Fellowship Lounge of First Congregational Church of Redlands, 2 W. Olive Ave.
“People of all ages will find the presentations valuable,” Walker said in a news release. “This seminar will be helpful to any person who has an aged family member. If you are elderly, you will find many helpful ideas on dealing with aging.”
Each session will cover a different topic related to aging.
This Sunday’s class is on “Staving off Physical Loss,” covering evaluating diminishing physical capacity, with the goal of coming to terms with those losses and with discussion on steps to prolong physical well-being.
The series continues with “Loss of Kingdom” on April 16 on learning to be happy even though one no longer has a job and its fellowship, social standing and responsibilities; and “Feeling Useless and Saving Our Mind,” May 7, includes looking at mind exercises to help prolong mental sharpness.
Other topics and dates are “Depression,” June 18; “Volunteering,” July 2; “Loss of Intimacy,” Aug. 27; “Being Alone,” Sept. 24; “Faith,” Oct. 29; “Planning Ahead,” Nov. 19, about keeping one’s estate in order and making wishes known; and “Counting Our Treasures,” Dec. 10.
Walker, who has won awards in senior swimming competitions, received his Master of Divinity degree from Fuller Theological Seminary. In addition to his ministerial work, he also has worked as a hospice chaplain for Redlands Community Hospice, Hospice of St. Mary’s and the Visiting Nurse Association Hospice.
