Dancers back from Carnival performance in Rio de Janeiro

-

Dancers from the Brazilian Dance Company in Temecula have returned from performing in the 2023 Carnival in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

Dancers from the school, founded by Courtney Carter, lived in Brazil during February to study Portuguese and immerse themselves in the local culture before the celebration, company dancer Nellie Toner said in an email.

Dancers underwent training in drumming, did hours of Afro Brazilian/samba practice and took dance lessons from seven top instructors in Brazil, Toner wrote. Also, Brazilian Dance Company members met samba dancers from across the world during the mid-february celebration.

During the event, Carter was the musa, or the muse; Nairobi Burks was the school’s top dancer as a passista; and dancers Toner and Kaia Lune performed on a float.
