Club awards $11,000 in scholarshi­ps to 6 students

The Upland Foothill Kiwanis Club recently awarded a total of $11,000 in scholarshi­ps to six students who graduated this spring from high schools in Rancho Cucamonga and Upland.

They are Isabelle Pinto and Emily Wang, both of Los Osos High School; Gordon Chang of Rancho Cucamonga High School; Eric Nguyen of Alta Loma High School; Lorelei Viernes of Etiwanda High School; and Karla Noperi of Upland High School.

Isabelle Pinto plans to attend Princeton University and become an aerospace engineer. She has been a member Key Club, a high school service organizati­on sponsored by Kiwanis, for four years and has served as president, vice president and event coordinato­r, according to a news release. She was one of the organizers of Youth for HOPE and her activities have included Speech and Debate Club, Human Rights Club, Girls Who Code Club and Academic Decathlon.

Gordon Chang plans to attend UC Irvine and study biomedical engineerin­g. In Key Cub, he has served as treasurer, district treasurer and president. His favorite volunteer project was the Cougar Relays, an event for special needs students in the Chaffey Joint Union High School District featuring a variety of outdoor games, according to the news release.

Eric Nguyen plans to attend UC San Diego and study computer science. In

Key Club, he has served as secretary and president. He has volunteere­d as a mentor and tutor to other students at Alta Loma High School and has completed more than 300 hours of volunteer service.

Emily Wang plans to attend UCLA and major in physiologi­cal science. In Key Club, she has served as secretary, president and Kiwanis relations chairman, and she helped lead Los Osos High School to win Division 15 North Kiwanis Key Club of the Year recognitio­n for 2021-22, according to the news release. She was one of the organizers of the Youth for HOPE program, and she volunteers at San Antonio Regional Hospital.

Lorelei Viernes plans to attend UC Berkeley and study early childhood education. In Key Club, she has served as historian, vice president and president and she has held positions in the local Key Club division, according to the news release.

Karla Noperi is the recipient of the Upland Foothill Kiwanis Club’s Bill Landecena Scholarshi­p, which is awarded to a student planning to attend a community college or trade school. Noperi plans to attend Chaffey College and pursue a degree in an art, communicat­ion or design program.

Members of the Upland Foothill Kiwanis Club’s Scholarshi­p Review Committee were Ralph Cavallo, chairman, and Dick Bell, Jack Sherman, Eric Herchenroe­der and Linda Trawnik.

The club meets every Wednesday morning and participat­es in or conducts more than 40 community service projects each year, according to the news release.

Ted Powl is president of the club.
