at the start of his career in Los Angeles, and not re-signing him following the 2004 season was a huge mistake — but remember, these were the Frank Mccourt Dodgers. Mauer was arguably the game’s best catcher during his prime with the Minnesota Twins, a seven-time Allstar, an MVP and a three-time batting champ.

Helton’s candidacy over the years was diminished because he played his home games in Colorado but his OPS+ of 133, adjusted to account for home park factors, indicates he wasn’t a one-park hitter. Wagner, with 422 career saves and an 85.9% success percentage over 16 seasons, was the prototypical guy who opposing managers wanted to avoid seeing in the ninth inning, but he fell five votes short in his second-to-last year on the ballot and maybe was hurt by his 10.03 postseason ERA.

Who were close calls on my ballot? Chase Utley and Jimmy Rollins, two of the linchpins of the Philadelphia Phillies’ success in the late 2000s and early 2010s, and Andruw Jones, Atlanta’s 10-time Gold Glove center fielder. (Although it must be noted that when we got a close-up look at Jones in 2008, after he signed with the Dodgers as a free agent, he showed up out of shape, didn’t act like he cared a lot and was released after one season. That’s not my definition of a Hall of Famer.)

Carlos Beltrán? Sorry. His role in Houston’s 2017 sign-stealing scandal doesn’t necessarily disqualify him, but it’ll be a while, maybe a long one, before I’m disposed to vote for him.

OK, let the arguments begin.
