Luis Sotero Leon, 74, of San Bernardino, CA, passed away in his home and surrounded by family on January 16, 2024. Louie, as he was called by friends and family, was known for his patriotic spirit and his kind and generous nature. He was a loving and caring individual who always brought joy and laughter to those around him. He was a devoted husband to Rosa Durgin and a cherished father to Patrick Leon (Gillian), Meaghan Leon (Patrick), Courtney Dawson (James), Jenice Uvillado (Robert), Omar Uvillado, and Shawn Uvillado. He was also a proud grandfathe­r to Omar Jr., Solana, Alex, Sophia, Katelyn, Spencer, Madeleine, Cora, and Jo.

Luis was preceded in death by his parents, Trinidad and Felipa Leon, his brother, Trinidad Jr., and his sister, Erlinda Roque. He is survived by his beloved wife, children, grandchild­ren, and his sister, Charlette "Bota" Botello.

Luis was born on May 12, 1949, in San Bernardino, graduated from San Bernardino High School in 1967, and later pursued higher education at San Bernardino Valley College. He served in the Navy from 1969 to 1975 as a Lithograph­er on the USS Iwo Jima and the USS Tripoli during the Vietnam War, where he displayed his unwavering dedication and commitment to his country. Luis was a Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veteran and received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Good Conduct Medal.

After his military service, Luis embarked on a successful career in the restaurant management industry, working at various establishm­ents including The Mexico, Carl's Jr., Coco's, Baker’s, and Del Taco. He also served as a board member at Casa Ramona in San Bernardino and as a chaplain at the VFW. Luis was an active member at St. Bernardine's and St. Anne's Catholic Church, where he served as a Eucharisti­c minister.

Outside of his profession­al and community involvemen­t, Luis had a variety of hobbies and interests. He collected hat pins, enjoyed exploring local eateries, and had a passion for movies, particular­ly westerns. Trips to Laughlin were always a source of excitement for him. He had a fondness for lemons and fruit with salt, and his favorite food was tacos with avocados. He was a fan of Star Wars and Elvis, which added to his vibrant personalit­y.

A Celebratio­n of Life will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at the San Bernardino VFW (2018 Foothill Blvd.) at 2:00 p.m. Luis will be laid to rest on Friday, February 23, 2024 in Riverside National Cemetery at 10:00 a.m.

Luis Leon will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched. His memory will be cherished forever as his spirit lives on in the hearts of those who loved him.
