Mccain's record performance earns recognition

-

It was quite a week for Centennial High product Jared Mccain.

The freshman helped Duke to two conference wins while earning AP national player of the week honorable mention recognition and his second Athletic Coast Conference Rookie of the Week honor.

On Saturday, Mccain, a 6-foot-3 guard, had a career-high 35 points on 12of-20 shooting (8 of 11 on 3-pointers) in a 76-67 victory over Florida State.

His point total tied Zion Williamson for the program’s class record and it tied the sixth highest total by a freshman in ACC history. The eight 3-pointers is a Blue Devils program freshman record.

“A special performance,” Duke coach Jon Scheyer said after the game. “That was up there with any of them . ... It was just his grit, his will, his determination to win was special.”

Last Monday, Mccain had 17 points and 10 rebounds in a 77-69 win over Wake Forest.

It was his fourth doubledouble of the season. He also earned his second ACC Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Week honor.

From the Duke athletic website:

“After averaging 7.6 points per outing in the first eight games of the season, (Mccain) has reached the 20-point mark in seven of the last 17 games, averaging 15.6 points and 5.1 rebounds per contest during Duke’s 15-2 run.
