Ducks trade Henrique, Carrick to Edmonton

-

The Ducks traded forwards Adam Henrique and Sam Carrick to the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday in exchange for a 2024 firstround draft selection, the team confirmed.

Additionally, the Ducks retained 50% of Henrique’s remaining salary and included a seventh-round pick. They received a conditional fifth-round selection from Edmonton, which will become a fourth-rounder if the Oilers win the Stanley Cup.

In order to facilitate the deal, Edmonton sought out the Tampa Bay Lightning as a third party. Tampa retained 25% of Henrique’s salary and sent prospect goalie Ty Taylor to Edmonton in exchange for a conditional fourth-round pick.

Henrique, 34, had been with the Ducks since 2017 when they acquired him from the New Jersey Devils in a deal involving defenseman Sami Vatanen. He accumulated 264 points in 435 games, including 42 this season, 23 of which have come in his past 23 games.

At 40-17-7, the Canucks have a two-point lead over Dallas atop the Western Conference.

The victory also allowed the Canucks to bounce back after a 5-1 loss to the Kings last Thursday in Vancouver.

Trevor Moore scored for the Kings, and Cam Talbot made 29 saves. Despite the loss, the Kings moved into a tie with Vegas for third place in the Pacific Division.

NFL Giants' Barkley moves closer to free agency

New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley moved another step closer to free agency club elected not to put a franchise tag on the second overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft.

The Giants used the tag last season and eventually worked out a one-year, $10.1 million contract before the start of training camp. A franchise tag this year would have cost the team $12.2 million if Barkley accepted the offer.

The sides have until next Wednesday to work out a deal.

• Buffalo purge of players cut deep into the team’s core with veteran safety Jordan Poyer and center Mitch Morse being among five players the team announced it had released on Wednesday. The Bills were $44 million over the cap.

• Washington is signing veteran tight end Zach Ertz, 33, reuniting him with Kliff Kingsbury, the Commander’s offensive coordinator who coached Ertz with Arizona.

NBA Cavs win on Kelce Bobblehead night

The Kelce brothers showed up for their own giveaway, cheered on the Cavs and chugged beers.

No, Taylor Swift wasn’t with them.

Cleveland-born Travis and Jason Kelce were both in attendance Tuesday night as the Cavaliers paid tribute to the NFL stars with a souvenir bobblehead depicting them in Cavs jerseys and holding basketballs.

The Kelces were treated to a memorable performance by the Cavs, who rallied from 22 points down in the fourth quarter to stun the Boston Celtics 105-104 and end the NBA’S longest winning streak this season at 11 games.

Cleveland rallied without All-star Donovan Mitchell, who missed the game with a knee injury, as well as forward Evan Mobley (Rancho Christian HS), who went out with a sprained ankle in the third quarter. Appropriately for this night, Dean Wade — a Kansas City native and diehard Chiefs fan — scored a career high 23 points, 20 of which came in the fourth quarter when he made five 3-pointers to rally the short-handed Cavs to victory over the NBA’S best team.
