Edey, top seed Purdue easily reach Sweet 16

Zach Edey had 23 points and 14 rebounds, and Midwest Region No. 1 seed Purdue cruised into the Sweet 16 by pounding eighthseed­ed Utah State 106-67 win the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday in Indianapol­is.

Trey Kaufman-renn added 18 points and eight boards for Purdue (31-7), which broke the school’s single-season record for victories.

Purdue also set a school record for most points in a March Madness game. Next up is fifth-seeded Gonzaga in the regio0nal semifinals in Detroit.

Great Osodor, the Mountain West Player of the Year, had 14 points and six rebounds for Utah State. The Aggies (28-7) were outrebound­ed 49-26.

South Region

MARQUETTE 81, COLORADO 77 >> In their third season under coach Shaka Smart, the second-seeded Golden Eagles (27-9) reached the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2013 by outlasting the 10th-seeded Buffaloes (26-11) in Indianapol­is.

Kam Jones scored 18 points for Marquette, which shot 61.8% from the field but still couldn’t shake Colorado until the closing seconds. Chase Ross made a tiebreakin­g 3-pointer with 2:53 left.

KJ Simpson scored 20 points and Tristan da Silva had 17 for Colorado, which trailed by 11 at halftime but rallied to take a 55-54 lead just over five minutes into the second half. Tyler Kolek put the Golden Eagles back on top with a short jumper and Marquette never trailed again, but Colorado tied it twice, the last time on a 3-pointer by da Silva with 4:02 remaining.

The Buffs trailed 79-77 and had to foul three times before putting David Joplin on the line for a 1-and1. He knocked down both and set up a regional semifinal meeting with No. 11 seed North Carolina State in Dallas on Friday.

DUKE 93, JAMES MADISON 55 >> Jared Mccain scored 22 of his 30 points in the first half and set a school record for an NCAA Tournament game with eight 3-pointers as the fourth-seeded Blue Devils ended the 12thseeded Dukes’ dream season with a victory at Barclays

Center in Brooklyn.

Duke (26-8) is headed to the Sweet 16 to face Houston or Texas A&M.

Duke emphatical­ly ended the nation’s longest active winning streak at 14 games, taking a 22-point lead into halftime. The rugged defense JMU used to beat Wisconsin in the first round didn’t seem to bother the Blue Devils at all.

The Dukes (32-4) finished with a program record for victories.

Mccain, the charismati­c freshman broke a school record set by Quinn Cook in a stunning first-round loss to Mercer in 2014.

Late Saturday East Region

IOWA STATE 67, NO. 25 WASHINGTON STATE 56 >> Tamin Lipsey scored 15 points and the Cyclones eliminated the Cougars to march into their seventh Sweet 16 with the victory in Omaha.

Iowa State (29-7) will play third-seeded Illinois on Thursday in Boston.

Jaylen Wells scored 20 for Washington State (25-10). ILLINOIS 89, DUQUESNE 63 >> Terrence Shannon Jr. scored 30 points, Marcus Domask added 22 and the No. 3-seeded Illini reached the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2005 with the victory in Omaha.

Illinois (28-8) hadn’t made it through the first weekend of the tournament in eight previous appearance­s.

Duquesne (25-12) was making its first tournament appearance since 1977.

Midwest Region

TENNESSEE 62, TEXAS 58 >> Dalton Knecht scored 18 points and made four free throws in the final 8.8 seconds as the Vols held off the seventh-seeded onghorns (21-13) in Charlotte to advance to the Sweet 16 for the second straight year.

Second-seeded Tennessee (26-8) will play No. 3 Creighton on Friday. CREIGHTON 86, OREGON 72, 2OT >> Steven Ashworth and Ryan Kalkbrenne­r made 3-pointers in the second overtime as the Bluejays outlasted the Ducks in Pittsburgh.

The 3s helped t Creighton (25-9) score the first 15 points of the second OT to finally put away the 11thseeded Ducks (24-12).

Ashworth scored 21 points, Trey Alexander added 20 and Kalkbrenne­r 19 for Creighton, which will face Tennessee on Friday in Detroit.

Jermaine Couisnard had 32 points, and N’faly Dante had 28 points and 20 rebounds for Oregon.

South Region

NORTH CAROLINA STATE 79, OAKLAND 73, OT >> DJ Burns Jr. scored 24 points, including a go-ahead putback that ignited a 9-0 run in overtime, and the 11thseeded Wolfpack advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2015, holding off the 14th-seeded Golden Grizzlies in Pittsburgh.

N.C. State (24-14) will play Marquette on Friday.

Trey Townsend had 30 points and 13 rebounds for Oakland (24-12).
