21ST CENTURY HOMESTEADI­NG: A new age of homesteade­r is embracing a mixture of technology and traditiona­l wisdom to expand their skills and gain control of their lives. Whether you have a small plot of land or several acres, you can benefit from this program sponsored by Cornell Cooperativ­e Extension of Saratoga County and Milton Grange #685. AUDABON SOCIETY: On Saturday, October 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the DelawareOt­sego Audubon Society will host an open house at the DOAS Sanctuary on Grange Hall Spur Road, Oneonta. At 10:30 a.m,. a Franklin Mountain hawk counter will conduct a workshop on how to identify flying hawks, followed at 11:30 a.m. by a trail walk through the Sanctuary which will end at the hawkwatch. At 12:30 p.m., guests will enjoy a special program with live raptors presented by Wildlife Rehabilita­tor, Missy Runyon of Friends of the Feathered and Furry Wildlife Center in Hunter. The Hawkwatch will be staffed throughout the day, and visitors can enjoy walking the Sanctuary property during the afternoon. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshmen­ts will be available throughout the day. AURIESVILL­E SHRINE: Family Summit 9:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. includes 11a.m. Mass with Bishop Scharfenbe­rger followed by Holy Hour.136 Shrine Rd #2, Fultonvill­e. BABYSITTIN­G COURSE: Adirondack Health & Safety once again be presents a child and babysittin­g at Gavin Park. This course is open to girls and boys, ages 10 and up. Participan­ts will learn the basics of CABS (Child and Babysittin­g Safety), along with CPR and first aid. The course runs from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday October 1. Pre-registrati­on and bag lunch is required. Cost for Wilton Residents is $60, Saratoga Springs School District Residents is $65, and all others is $70. Registrati­on can be done online, by mail or in person at Gavin Park, MondayFrid­ay from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Questions may be answered by calling the park office at 584-9455. BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS: New Skete Blessing of the Animals, in celebratio­n of the Feast of Saint Francis. New Skete Monastery, 273 New Skete Lane, Cambridge. All and the animals they love are welcome. Arrival begins at 2 p.m., service is at 3:30 p.m., light refreshmen­ts of the season to follow.
