Samuel Cahan
SARATOGA SPRINGS Mr. Samuel Cahan passed away April 1, 2017 in Saratoga Springs, NY with his loving family by his side.
A clear minded and articulate conversationalist, Sam, 100 years old, was a great encourager and inspiration to family, friends and neighbors.
He was a NY City Fire Department Battalion Chief and a dedicated advocate of fire safety. A World War II Army Airforce navigation instructor, chapter president of an international safety organization, Commander in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve, college professor, and regional safety director for U.S. General Services Administration, Sam was also honored in the 1960’s for rescuing and reviving a little girl who was drowning in a pool.
Sam was always a diplomat and a gentleman, as seen for example through his numerous letters to the editors of the Saratogian and Albany Times Union.
Mr. Cahan is preceded in death by Helen his beloved wife of 47 years.
He’s survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Sally Cahan; four grandchildren and their spouses (Kimberly and Bob Carr; Starra and David Sherin; Joel and Stacey Cahan; and Levi and Deby Cahan); his niece Irene Simon and great niece Mindi Jarvis; as well as 13 great grandchildren and a greatgreat grandson.
There will be a private family memorial hour followed by burial in Beth David Cemetery in Queens, New York.
