ONEONTA, N.Y. » The Saratoga Regional YMCA Springette­s Gymnastics Team had many athletes with big finishes at the New York State YMCA Gymnastics Championsh­ips at SUNY Oneonta on April 22-23.

The Oneonta YMCA hosted the meet for nine New York State YMCA gymnastics teams, and more than 200 athletes attended — 30 from Saratoga. In order to qualify for the competitio­n, gymnasts needed to hit a set qualifying all-around score during the season.

The eight Saratoga athletes to come home with all-around state champions were senior Marissa Verro (level 9, senior), Abby Moller (level 8 senior), Jordan Toma (level 7 senior), Katy Hawthorne (level 7 junior), Brynne Wright (level 6 senior), Rya Torres (level 5 junior), Megan Wishart (level 5 senior), and Marianna Nasta (level 4 junior). The Saratoga Regional Y also had 29 first place finishes for individual events.

In the team competitio­n, Saratoga Entered four teams. The level 3 team took 4th place, the level 4 team placed 2nd, the level 5 team placed 1st, and the level 7 team placed 1st.

Level 9: Marissa Verro placed 2nd on vault, 1st on bars, 1st on beam, and 2nd on floor for 1st all-around. Level 8: Abby Moller placed 2nd on vault, 1st on bars, 1st on beam, 4th on floor, and 1st all-around. Level 7 senior: Jordan Toma placed 2nd on vault, 1st on bars, 1st on beam, and 2nd on floor and 1st all-around. Samantha Brantigan placed 1st on vault, 3rd on bars, 2nd on beam, 1st on floor, and 2nd all-around. Level 7 junior: Katy Hawthorne placed 4th on vault, 1st on bars, 2nd on beam, 1st on floor and 1st all-around. Kaylee Ferro placed 2nd on vault, 5th on bars, 3rd on beam, 2nd on floor and 2nd all-around. Kaitlyn Kidder placed 5th on vault, 4th on bars, 1st on beam, and 4th on floor for 3rd place all-around. Level 6 senior: Brynne Wright swept the events and the allaround with first place finishes on the vault, bars, beam, and floor and in the all-around. Level 5 youth (age 10 & under): Leah Torres placed 3rd on vault, 2nd on bars, 3rd on beam, 1st on floor and 2nd place in the all-around. Level 5 junior: Rya Torres placed 3rd on the vault, 2nd on the bars, 2nd on the beam, and 2nd on the floor for 1st place all-around. Olivia Allen placed 5th on the vault, 3rd on the bars, 8th on the beam, 4th on the floor and 4th place all-around. Level 5 senior: Megan Wishart was 1st in the vault, 2nd on the bars, 2nd on the beam, 2nd on the floor and 1st all-around. Morgan Thompson was 3rd on the vault, 1st on the bars, 3rd on the beam, and 1st on the floor for 2nd place all-around. Sophia Sperling placed 2nd on the vault, 3rd on the bars, and 1st on the beam. Level 4 junior: Erika Sudigala placed 4th on the vault, 4th on the bars, 1st on the beam, and 4th on the floor for 2nd place allaround. Sydney Crombach placed 5th on the vault, 6th on the bars, 4th on the beam, 3rd on the floor and 4th in the all-around. Ariana Matos placed 7th on the vault, 2nd on the bars, 3rd on the beam, 11th on floor, and 5th all-around. Alexis Hewitt placed 9th on the vault, 7th on the bars, 5th on the beam, 10th on floor, and 8th all-around. Level 4 senior: Marianna Nasta swept all four events – 1st on vault, bars, beam and floor, for a 1st place all-around finish. Level 3 age 9: Ava Peruffo placed 4th on vault, 7th on bars, 9th on beam, 6th on floor and 7th all-around. Mia Wishart placed 9th on vault, 3rd on bars, 7th on beam, 9th on floor and 8th all-around. Level 2 age 10: Emma Murray placed 5th on vault, 7th on bars, 8th on beam, 8th on floor, and 9th all-around. Level 3 age 13 & up: Savanna Schalberg placed 3rd on vault, 2nd on bars, 2nd on beam, 2nd on floor and 3rd all-around. Level 3 age 12: Emily Bailey placed 5th on vault, 4th on bars, 4th on beam, 4th on floor, and 4th all-around. Level 3 age 11: Lia Mahar placed 6th on vault, 1st on bars, 3rd on beam, 1st on floor and 2nd allaround. Katie Elder placed 5th on vault, 3rd on bars, 4th on beam, 2nd on floor and 3rd all-around. Erin Ward placed 7th on vault, 4th on bars, 1st on beam, 9th on floor and 6th all-around. Ruby Sprengneth­er placed 9th on vault, 5th on bars, 7th on beam, 5th on floor and 7th all around. Giada Cunningham placed 11th on vault, 12th on bars, 12th on beam, 10th on floor and 12th all-around.

Girls lacrosse

BURNT HILLS-BALLSTON LAKE 16, RED HOOK 5 >> Taylor Safford led all scorers with four goals and three assists in a Spartans rout of nonleague competitio­n. Lauren Hopsicker and Alex Safford added hat tricks for Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake. SCHUYLERVI­LLE 18, SOUTH GLENS FALLS 1 >> Amy Moreau scored 10 goals to lead the Black Horses to a big win over South Glens Falls in a Foothills Council game. Grace Hanchan added a hat trick for Schuylervi­lle.

Gabrielle Kreppein scored to ensure South High avoided the shutout.

Men’s college lacrosse

UALBANY MEN RISE IN POLLS >> The UAlbany men’s lacrosse team went up a spot to No. 6 in the USILA Coaches Poll and No. 5 in the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll.

UAlbany has been placed in the top-10 of each poll since the middle of March. The Great Danes are coming off a 16-10 victory over Hartford on Saturday.

Women’s college lacrosse

DANES RETAIN NO. 17 RANKING >> The UAlbany women’s lacrosse team held its place in the ILWomen Media Poll and USLacrosse Magazine Poll at No. 17 in the nation. UAlbany is currently on a six-game winning streak, including a 2110 victory over Binghamton on Saturday.

Judo

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH >> Athletes from the Jason Morris Judo Center had a stellar day at the U.S. Senior Nationals, Saturday. winning six medals including three gold.

Brad Bolen (28) and Kell Berliner (23) both won titles in their respective divisions. Bolen went 4-0 at 73 kilograms on his way to claiming his 4th straight National title.

It was his fifth overall title to tie Carrie Chandler for the most for a JMJC athlete in it’s 16 year history.

Bolen also tied Chandler’s mark of eight total medals at the Nationals for the JMJC.

Berliner earned his first National crown going 4-0 at 81 kg to become the first one in his family to do so. His father Gary was a National contender during the early 80s and earned four (3 silver) medals — but never gold. Gary and Kell exchanged a touching father/ son embrace directly after Kell’s victory.

Burnt Hills High School Senior, Quentin Cook (18) took his second straight National silver medal at 66 kg after losing in the final to Cole Chandler (19) from Hawaii.

Cook was leading the bout 2-1 in scores when he was called for an illegal head dive and disqualifi­ed with about 30 seconds left.

Chandler defeated Cook in last years final as well.

Bolen and Cool also represent the NYAC.

Pete Stanley (32) was a double medalist on the day, first winning a gold in the Masters (30-34) 100-plus kg division then picked up a bronze in the Open weight category.

Nate Keeve (22) made it all the way to the final of 100 kg before losing to John Jayne and settling for silver. Keeve is the son of two-time Olympian Damon Keeve.

While one group was doing battle in Salt Lake City, the Pan Am Championsh­ips in Panama City were on its second day.

JMJC’s Nicole Stout (20) dropped her first 70 kg match to Maria Carla Chirila (Canada) and was eliminated from her first Pan Ams.
