SGF Schools launch reading program
SOUTH GLENS FALLS, N.Y. >> South Glens Falls Central Schools is holding a firstever “Everybody Reads” program for students in kindergarten through grade 5 this month.
The event, at each of the district’s four elementary schools, was created by a committee of teachers, principals and library media specialists to promote literacy and unify the community.
As part of the initiative, the district will be giving one copy of the book, “The World According to Humphrey,” to each family with an elementary school-aged child, to all staff members that interact with these children in the district, and businesses that families patronize throughout the community.
“Our vision for the project is twofold,” said Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Kristine Orr.
“We want to inspire children to read and have fun, and we want our community to be a part of a shared experience through reading.”
The book title was chosen by district library media specialists and teachers. It tells the story of Humphrey, a classroom pet, through his own eyes and what he learns about life, families and school from his vantage point in Room 26.
In addition to reading, students have the opportunity to participate in a Humphrey scavenger hunt throughout South Glens Falls. Humphrey’s picture is hanging in participating businesses throughout the district and students can hunt for 10 photos of Humphrey.
