BETHESDA EPISCOPAL CHURCH: The Capital Region’s magnificent historic churches will participate in the New York Landmarks Conservancy’s seventh annual Sacred Sites Open House Weekend. There are 31 stained glass windows from the 19th and early 20th centuries at Bethesda Episcopal Church, including three signed Tiffany windows on the north facing side, installed in the late 1890 s. Altar window andre red os are by J& R Lamb Studios. The church is a contributing element in the Saratoga Springs Downtown Historic District (National Register). Architectural style is Gothic Revival, one of the earliest by Upjohn, contemporaneous with Trinity Wall Street. STUDIOS: In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month in May, C.R.E.A.T.E. Community Studios presents an exhibit to help raise awareness about various issues in mental health. The artists involved have all used various art media to express personal issues and conflicts and, in some cases, reach a resolution and new sense of self-awareness. The artwork is displayed to raise awareness about mental illness and the 1 in 5 people affected by it, to erase stigma, and to educate our community about the role of the creative arts in treating mental illness. MALTA ARMED FORCES DAY: Residents and participants are set to gather on Saturday, May 20, to honor Armed Forces Day with an annual parade and ceremony. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. on Bayberry Drive and travel south on Route 9, where it will end on Blacksmith Drive. The parade will briefly pause in front of the Stewart’s Shop at the circle of Routes 9 and 67 in order to give recognition to a Meneely Bell recently donated as a gift to Malta from Bill Dake, CEO of Stewarts Shops and the Dake Corporation. The church will open its doors to highlight painted glass windows during selfguided tours. Other historic artifacts, including the 1921 Meneely Bell Chimes, will be among the highlights exhibited at the Episcopal church founded 217 years ago. SARATOGA HORSE SYMPOSIUM: Horse lovers, mark your calendars for the 26th Annual Saratoga Horse Symposium on Saturday, May 20, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.at the Saratoga County 4-H Training Center, 556 Middle Line Road, Ballston Spa. This celebration of the horse is for new, aspiring and experienced horse owners. Attendees have a unique opportunity to interact with horses, equine veterinarians, and presenters alike. There will also be a Silent Auction offering a great selection of goods and services donated by many local businesses. All proceeds from this annual fundraiser directly benefit educational equine programming and the 4-H Training Center. SCOHARIE CROSSING: Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site will be participating in the national program called Kids to Parks Day on Saturday, May 20. Bring the kids or grandkids out to the park for a nature program and exploration of the natural wonders of this rich historic site. The leisurely nature walk starts next to the Visitor Center at 11 a.m. and it will take about 90 minutes with interpretive staff. After the walk, children will be encouraged to participate in a craft project.
