FLAG DAY EVENT: Moreau and South Glens Falls Historical Society will hold its annual Flag Day celebration at 1 p.m. Sunday at Parks-Bentley Place, 53 Ferry Blvd. in South Glens Falls. Members of the South Glens Falls American Legion will present the flag and the Phoenix Rising band from South Glens Falls Methodist Church will perform patriotic music. In addition, the Jane McCrea Chapter of the D.A.R. will serve strawberry sundaes. Visitors are asked to bring lawn chairs or blankets to the event. GRANT COTTAGE: ”She Called Him Raymond, A True Story of Love, Loss, Faith and Healing,” 1 p.m. A letter penned in 1944 uncovers the powerful and heartfelt story of Helen Gregg, one of eight children of Irish immigrant parents, raised in the miseries of Hell’s Kitchen during the Great Depression, and Clarence Raymond Stephenson, a young aspiring B-17 pilot from the small, struggling city of Ironton, Ohio. Their captivating and poignant story will be explored by author Ray O’Conor in a program in the Grant Cottage Visitor Center, 100 Mt. McGregor Road, Wilton. The suggested donation for programs is $5 per person. HUDSON CROSSING TRIATHLON: The eighth Hudson Crossing Triathlon is scheduled for Sunday, June 11, at Hudson Crossing Park in Saratoga County. Sanctioned by USA Triathlon, the race includes a 500-yard swim, 12-mile bike ride and 5K run, starting at 8 a.m. The event is free for spectators; cost for racers varies depending on date registered. HUMAN TRAFFICKING DISCUSSION: Human trafficking involves a variety of forms, including forced labor and commercial sexual exploitation. The discussion will provide an overview of the potential immigration issues relating to immigrant victims of human trafficking and the statewide efforts underway to identify and respond to the needs of immigrant victims of human trafficking while protecting
and preserving their basic human rights. SAAS PICNIC: The Southern Adirondack Audubon Society (SAAS) offers a free picnic to chapter members at the Wilton Wildlife Preserve, off Scout Road, Gansevoort. The picnic will take place on Sunday June 11, from noon to 3 p.m. in place of the monthly June program. The Saratoga Springs Lions Club will be the chefs, offering hamburgers, hot dogs and more. BUTTERFLY WALK: There are many opportunities for guided nature walks at Wilton Wildlife Preserve to look for Karner blue butterflies. These walks will take place on Wednesdays through June 22. The walks will be offered twice a day, at 11 a.m. and again at 4 p.m. The walks leave from the parking area for the Old Gick Farm on Route 50 which is just under 4 miles past Wilton Mall. The walks should last about an hour and cover a mile of gently rolling terrain. The walks will not take place if there is rain. Please dress appropriately for weather and insects. COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS: On Wednesday, June 14, the Saratoga Springs City School District and Mediation Matters will jointly sponsor “Community Conversations.” The purpose of the event is to promote dialogue that helps to create a more peaceful community. FLAG DISPOSAL CEREMONY: The Saratoga National Cemetery Honor Guard Association will conduct a flag disposal ceremony at the Saratoga National Cemetery on Wednesday, June 14, starting at 9a.m.. The U.S. Flag Code suggests that when a flag has served its useful purpose, “it should be destroyed, preferably by burning.” For individual citizens, this should be done discreetly so the act of destruction is not perceived as a protest or desecration. Individuals, businesses, government offices and organizations seeking proper disposal of their worn flags are invited to drop them off in the administration office at the cemetery.
