Sundae on the Farm this Sunday
NORTHUMBERLAND, N.Y. » Saratoga County’s 22nd Annual “Sundae on the Farm” is scheduled for noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at King’s Ransom Farm, home of King Brothers Dairy, at 311 King Rd. in Northumberland.
The event is free and open to the public and includes dairy farm tours, children’s activities, farm animals for viewing, horsedrawn wagon rides, live music and agricultural exhibits.
More than 3,500 people are expected to attend this popular event, which is held at a different local farm each year.
There will also be a spelling bee and Stewart’s Shops ice cream eating contest for children.
Sundaes will be made with Stewart’s ice cream and hot fudge topping from Sundae’s Best Hot Fudge and maple syrup from Maple Valley Farm. Pie a la mode will be served featuring homemade pies from Smith’s Orchard Bake Shop. In addition, a showcase of horses and farmer’s market is planned.
Parking is plentiful and several trams, staffed by people who can answer farm-related questions, will take visitors between the parking area and farm.
More than 50 years ago there were 1,800 farms in Saratoga County. Today about 650, roughly onethird as many, are left. Because fewer people are directly involved in farming, not many have the opportunity to experience agriculture first-hand and understand how food is produced. Sundae on the Farm tries to help people connect with agriculture by giving people a chance to visit farms and meet farmers directly.
The event is organized by the Saratoga County Agricultural Promotion Committee and sponsored by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Saratoga County, Saratoga County Farm Bureau, and the town of Northumberland.
