Declaration of Independence. 20 immigrants from countries all over the world will become new citizens of the United States of America. Fife and drums, color guard, and musket firings frame this special event organized by Sons of the American Revolution, Daughters of the American Revolution, Friends of Saratoga Battlefield and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. The League of Women Voters will be onsite with voter registration forms for anyone interested in registering. Join volunteer Joe Craig at 2 p.m. as a messenger from 1776 reading the Declaration of Independence, with authentic 18th century toasts reflecting the insightful wit of the document signers. Enjoy free lemonade to share in the toasts, followed by celebratory musket firings. These events are free and open to the public. USS SLATER: USS Slater will be open to the public for guided tours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Independence Day, July 4. Typically, the ship is closed on Tuesday for continuing restoration, but exceptions are made for significant holidays. Admission is charged. Albany’s World War II destroyer escort is the only DE afloat in America. USS Slater is located on the Hudson River in Downtown Albany just south of the Dunn Memorial Bridge. Admission is $9 for adults and $7 for children. FREE YOUNG & FUN: The Lake Placid Center for the Arts’ (LPCA) Free Young & Fun Performance Series is dedicated to bringing the best entertainment for all ages to Lake Placid. KARNER BLUE BUTTERFLY WALKS: The endangered Karner blue butterfly has two broods every summer. Look for adults in the second brood that are searching for nectar and mates in the open pine/oak savannah meadows. The walk will depart from Old Gick Farm trailhead on route 50, north of King Road, at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Preregistration is strongly encouraged. The Park Naturalist will lead this beginner’s paddle around the lake pointing out signs of summer and other wonderful sights that are more enjoyable from an up-close perspective given by a kayak. SCHOONER LEGACY TOUR: The Lois McClure, a full-scale replica of an 1862-class sailing canal boat, will stop at Hudson Crossing Park in Schuylerville on Thursday, July 6, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Families are invited to tour the schooner at no cost. The Legacy Tour of the canal schooner Lois McClure this summer marks the 200th anniversary of the Erie Canal with a celebration of waterways and trees. Visitors will be welcomed aboard to discover how “boatwood” trees (white oak and white pine) have been essential for centuries in boat building and in the forest ecosystem.
