GRANT COTTAGE: The Wheatfield, Gettysburg, 1 p.m. Historian Marilyn Jess first visited the Gettysburg battlefield over 15 years ago. She has expanded her knowledge of Civil War battlefields through reading, joining preservation efforts, and visiting other Civil War and Revolutionary War battlefields. In 2010, she attended the multi-day Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College, and continues to do so annually. THANK YOU PARTY: The Galway Lions Club is hosting a Thank You Party in celebration of the community’s 35 years of support on Saturday, July 29, from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. at the Galway Lions Building, 2167 County Route 45 in Galway. The event is free and open to the entire community, both children and adults. There will be soccer, volleyball, Frisbee toss, softball, face painting, a demonstration by the Galway Karate Club, a visit from a friendly therapy dog, live music and food. CROQUET ON THE GREEN: Now in its fourth year, the annual Croquet on the Green event will take place Tuesday, August 1, on the lawn at AIM Services, Inc., 4227, Route 50, Saratoga Springs. Doors will open at 2:30 p.m. for anyone interested in free lessons on how to play croquet from USCA National Champion Francis J. Palasieski. The Tournament, starting at 3 p.m., consists of teams of two and is open to all ages, abilities and skill. The cost to enter the Tournament is $50 per individual (the fee also includes access to the accompanying Garden Party). Any skill level is welcome. Equipment and instruction will be provided. FIRE FEAST: At least five nationally and internationally renowned farm-totable chefs will be featured at a “fire feast” hosted by Pitney Meadows Community Farm (PMCF) on Tuesday, August 1. The focus of the multi-course dinner will be five live-fire pits, each of which will be directed by a celebrated guest chef. Favorite area musicians will perform throughout the evening, which will run from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Also in the spotlight will be PMCF’s new 42 x 148-foot Harnois “high tunnel,” which will serve as both an event space and a greenhouse for growing vegetables. With a floor one-tenth the size of a football field, it will accommodate as many as 300 people for this “farm fashionable” sit-down dinner. General admission tickets are $200, with the option of joining the honorary committee at $300, $400, and $500 giving levels. Grant has recovered enough from his shock and sorrow to talk about the late President. Lincoln and Grant were the leadership team that won the Civil War. The General, portrayed by Grant Cottage tour guide Steve Trimm, will discuss the unique working relationship he had with his Commander-In-Chief and the human qualities that made Lincoln, the man, so remarkable. 1 p.m., 1000 Mt.
