The Saratogian (Saratoga, NY)

Five Questions

-

David Bilger is a member of the Philadelphia Orchestra, which opens its annual residency Wednesday at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs.

1 Who are you?

My name is David Bilger, and I’m completing my 22nd season as principal trumpet of the Philadelphia Orchestra.

2 What are some of the most rewarding aspects of your role as a principal trumpet player with The Philadelphia Orchestra?

There so many things that make my job hugely rewarding that it’s hard to know where to start! First of all, I’d have to say that bringing to life great works of art and having the opportunity to share those performances with audiences is the most important thing. The energy we produce onstage and the feedback we get from the listeners is addictive! Next on the list is the joy of collaborating with my colleagues. A day doesn’t pass in which I’m not amazed by what I hear, and I feel beyond lucky to be surrounded by so many great musical artists. If I had to limit my list to three items, the last would be that my job affords me the opportunity to mentor the next generation of orchestral musicians. I feel strongly about both the role of the arts in our society, and the worth of music education. Offering training and inspiration to younger musicians is an important part of keeping the arts alive.

3 Where do you like to go when visiting Saratoga Springs with The Philadelphia Orchestra?

Over the past couple of decades I’ve had the chance to explore a lot of what makes Saratoga special. My family and I never skip having a breakfast at the race track, we enjoy attending a polo match, and we always make a trip or two with my son to the library. The automobile museum is a must, and of course there is a long list of favorite restaurants. Congress Park, a day on one of the lakes, it’s a long list of activities. We try to do a bit of everything.

4 When did you realize that you wanted to become a professional musician?

When I was a junior in high school, the college search process forced me to choose a career path. I was torn between studying mathematics and computer science or becoming a professional musician. I knew I would always regret abandoning the trumpet, so I decided to see where music would take me. It turned out to be a good choice.

5 Why do you enjoy playing at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center?

SPAC is a special place. The sound in the amphitheater is arguably the best of any outdoor venue. It’s a joy to play on that stage. Playing with the orchestra at SPAC also has an undeniable feeling of tradition. And the audiences are amazing.
