CARDBOARD BOAT RACE:
Hudson Crossing Park presents its 13th Annual Cardboard Boat Race on Saturday, August 12, (rain date is Sunday, August 13) at Fort Hardy Park beach on Route 29 in Schuylerville from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. This year’s theme is “The Erie Canal, We Dig It!” celebrating the bicentennial of the Erie Canal. Race participants will construct a “human-powered” boat made of corrugated cardboard or 100 percent recycled materials, holding at least one crew member and “seaworthy” enough to race a short distance on the Hudson River. Racers may construct boats ahead of time or on the morning of the event (materials will be available at the event site for a nominal fee). During race preparations, there will be food, live music and lots of creativity. The first cardboard boat race launches at 1 p.m. Admission is free for spectators. Saratoga Springs Heritage Area Visitor Center’s new, 90-minute guided walking tour of downtown Saratoga is “Discover Historic Broadway,” hosted by two native Saratogians, and provide an immersive glimpse into the history of our awardwinning main street. Guests will stroll through modern day shops, boutiques and galleries, and will wrap-up with a mineral water toast in Congress Park. Knipper Knolls Equine Center in Gansevoort, a 501C3 not-for-profit, focuses on providing opportunities for experiencing the joy of horsemanship through therapeutic (adaptive) riding and physical therapy using the horse’s motion (hippotherapy) to children with special needs. FREE PUPPET SHOW:
On Saturday, August 12, the Moreau and South Glens Falls Historical Society will hold a free puppet show for families at 10:30 am at Parks-Bentley Place on Ferry Boulevard in South Glens Falls. Titled “Puppet Potpourri XP,” the show performed by the Puppet People includes not only the funny antics of hand puppets, mouth puppets, rod puppets, and trick marionettes, but great musical favorites such as “The Entertainer”, “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice “, and “The Charleston”. Funded by a Stewart’ Shops Holiday Sharing Grant the event is free, although donations are appreciated. Presented by the 77th New York Regimental Balladeers, “Johnny Has Gone for a Soldier 17761976” is a music and film tribute honoring all who served. Experience America’s wartime story through song, still images, film, verse and several sing-a-long segments. This special concert in honor of the “Citizen Soldier” is a music timeline that harkens back to the era of the fiddle and banjo, concert hall productions, and radio broadcasts. Sunday, Aug. 13 18TH CENTURY DAY: Over 25 colonial artisans will ply their crafts on the spacious grounds of the Philip Schuyler House on Sunday, August 13, from noon to 5 p.m. at the 39th annual 18th Century Day celebration. The Schuyler House, on Route 4 in Schuylerville, was built quickly in November 1777 by Philip Schuyler to replace the lavish home burned by General John Burgoyne following his defeat at the Battles of Saratoga. Sharon Peck and Joe Craig, retired National Park Service ranger will stage a Punch and Judy show and Ridley and Anne Enslow will play period music on the violin and hammered dulcimer.
