CEMETERY: The Ballston Spa Cemetery Association is looking for volunteers to help with several projects in the village cemetery. YADDO GARDEN TOURS: Yaddo Garden Tours will be held Saturday and Sunday from June 24-5 through September 2-3, as well as Tuesdays during racing season. GRANT COTTAGE: Knee-High History, 10 a.m. The Civil War years were more than soldiers at war. In song and story, program facilitators Diana O’Brien and Tom Smith will remind us that there were heroes on the battlefields, cities, towns and villages who built upon the legacy left by our nation’s founders and who envisioned a country of freedom and opportunity for all. Designed specifically for young learners ages 3-9, this program is the first in a series of three Civil War-themed programs for children. BENNINGTON CENTER FOR THE ARTS: Broken Box Mime Theater will be in residence at the Bennington Center for the Arts from August 24-27. Winners of the 2016 New York Innovative Theatre Awards for Outstanding Ensemble, Performance Art, and Choreography/Movement, BKBX activates the imagination of their audiences and contemporizes the art of mime, while reminding us of the power of simple storytelling. On Sunday, August 27, at 2 p.m., learn about contemporary mime, collaborative process, and how simple storytelling can be a vehicle for impactful theater. Admission is “pay what you can.” Funds received go directly towards paying the artists’ travel expenses. GRANT COTTAGE: Explore the life of Frederick (Fred) Dent Grant, eldest son of Ulysses and Julia Grant, from childhood on a Missouri plantation to Civil War battlefields, West Point graduation and a career as U.S. diplomat and Major General. Like his father, Fred encountered hardships and scandals but displayed characteristic resolve to fulfill his duty through it all. When needed by his father in his final months, Fred faithfully and tirelessly served as the family’s spokesman and provided critical support to his mother and other family members following his father’s death. Fred Grant will be portrayed by Grant Cottage staff member and living historian Ben Kemp. 1 p.m., 1000 Mt. McGregor Road, Wilton. HISTORY STROLL: Saratoga Spa State Park docent programs will be offered daily through Labor Day Monday, September 4. Discover park history on a short walk to learn about historic uses for mineral waters, the 1930s spa complex for research and medical treatment, and other park history highlights. NOT JUST FOR KIDS STORYTELLING: Storyteller Joe Bruchac will be performing at Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site on Sunday, August 27 at 6 p.m. as part of the annual Not Just for Kids Storytelling series. His performance will take place outdoors in front of the Schoharie Crossing Visitor Center on Schoharie Street in Fort Hunter. The show will move indoors in case of rain. Guests are invited to linger, chat, and enjoy refreshments after the show. The event is free. The Not Just for Kids Storytelling series continues throughout August and into September.
