MALTA, N.Y. » A Sept. 11 public hearing is scheduled for a $942,873 tax abatement Arnoff Moving & Storage is seeking for its planned $4.5 million expansion at 10 Stonebreak Rd.

The company moved there earlier this year from its former home, the old RCA building on Broadway in Albany.

Arnoff bought an existing 75,000-square-foot building on Stonebreak Road from Racemark International LP, whose operations are now located in Switzerland and Georgia.

Arnoff paid $6.175 million for the building, which had been vacant for several years, and a surrounding 40 acres.

Next, the company spent another $5 million to rehabilitate the building, repair parking lots and make a 20,000-square-foot addition that’s expected to create 33 new jobs over three years including administrative employees, warehouse workers and truck drivers.

The latest proposed expansion would be 43,800 more square feet of warehouse space, plus a separate 7,700-square-foot truck maintenance facility. These expansions are expected to create another 20 jobs, bringing total employment to almost 95 people.

The project is also expected to require 38 construction jobs.

If plans move forward, the company will have spent more than $15 million at its new Malta location.

Arnoff hopes to break ground on the newest expansion this fall. Work is expected to last about six months, said Dennis Brobston, Saratoga Economic Development Corp. president.

Arnoff is seeking tax abatements, over 10 years, from Saratoga County Industrial Development Agency. This includes $759,826 in property tax and $203,000 in sales tax savings, respectively.

With IDA administrative fees factored in, the actual savings comes to $942,873.

Arnoff’s diverse clients include Curtis Lumber Company, GlobalFoundries, and The Hyde Collection in Glens Falls. It stores windows, doors and cabinets for Curtis Lumber and transports gases and parts for GlobalFoundries. Arnoff also has a climatecontrolled storage unit where valuable Hyde Collection art pieces are kept, Brobston said.

“They have various kinds of storage depending on the need,” Brobston said.

Brobston said Arnoff hopes to develop most of its entire Malta property with up to three new, 100,000-square-foot buildings, possibly involving partnerships with other companies. For example, a tooling company that supports GlobalFoundries would be a good fit, he said.

The firm Applied Materials, which makes manufacturing tools for GlobalFoundries, already leases 18,000 square feet at Arnoff’s existing Malta building.

Arnoff also owns property in Dutchess County and Litchfield, Ct.

The old RCA building in Albany is being converted to residential units. It’s an iconic Capital Region landmark, known for the 28foot tall RCA dog “Nipper” atop the roof.

The IDA’s public hearing on proposed tax abatements is scheduled for 8 a.m., Monday, Sept. 11 in the Malta Town Hall meeting room. The IDA is expected to vote on abatements immediately after the hearing.
