THE ARTS: Broken Box Mime Theater will be in residence at the Bennington Center for the Arts from August 24-27. Winners of the 2016 New York Innovative Theatre Awards for Outstanding Ensemble, Performance Art, and Choreography/Movement, BKBX activates the imagination of their audiences and contemporizes the art of mime, while reminding us of the power of simple storytelling. On Sunday, August 27, at 2 p.m., learn about contemporary mime, collaborative process, and how simple storytelling can be a vehicle for impactful theater. Admission is “pay what you can.” Funds received go directly towards paying the artists’ travel expenses. BOOK SIGNING ON USS SLATER:
Author Martin Irons will be on hand at USS SLATER from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday, August 27, for the release of his new book, “Phalanx Against the Divine Wind.” Joining him will be surviving families of two local sailors who were killed during Kikusui No., the first and largest of ten mass kamikaze attacks against the U.S. Navy Fifth Fleet in the waters off Okinawa in 1945. Nearly 500 U.S. sailors were killed including Arthur Goyer, Radioman 2nd Class from Troy, and John R. Dyer, Jr. Radioman 3rd Class from West Chazy, aboard the USS HAYNSWORTH DD-700, the first warship hit. USS SLATER is located on the Hudson River in Downtown Albany. GRANT COTTAGE: Explore the life of Frederick (Fred) Dent Grant, eldest son of Ulysses and Julia Grant, from childhood on a Missouri plantation to Civil War battlefields, West Point graduation and a career as U.S. diplomat and Major General. Like his father, Fred encountered hardships and scandals but displayed characteristic resolve to fulfill his duty through it all. When needed by his father in his final months, Fred faithfully and tirelessly served as the family’s spokesman and provided critical support to his mother and other family members following his father’s death. Fred Grant will be portrayed by Grant Cottage staff member and living historian Ben Kemp. 1 p.m., 1000 Mt. McGregor Road, Wilton. NOT JUST FOR KIDS STORYTELLING:
Storyteller Joe Bruchac will be performing at Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site on Sunday, August 27 at 6 p.m. as part of the annual Not Just for Kids Storytelling series. His performance will take place outdoors in front of the Schoharie Crossing Visitor Center on Schoharie Street in Fort Hunter. The show will move indoors in case of rain. Guests are invited to linger, chat, and enjoy refreshments after the show. The event is free. The Not Just for Kids Storytelling series continues throughout August and into September. SARATOGA SPRINGS SUMMER STROLL:
The Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation presents “Saratoga’s Historic West Side.” George DeMers will lead guests through the restored Historic West Side, also known as Little Dublin, Learn about Saratoga’s Irish and Italian immigrants who helped shape the history of this unique district. TREKONDEROGA:
Fans attending Trekonderoga Weekend will have the opportunity to meet some of “Star Trek’s” most iconic stars. Original series stars Nichelle Nichols and Walter Koenig – plus Lee Meriwether, Barbara Luna, Charlie Brill, Michael Dante, Eddie Paskey, and Mary Linda Rapelye – will join fans for tours, photo ops, and autographs, panels and personal time.
