Native American Festival on Sunday
» The Saratoga Native American Festival is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the National Museum of Dance.
The festival offers authentic Native American drumming, dance, storytelling, music, crafts and native foods. Events will take place on the museum grounds and inside the museum’s Swyer Studios.
The National Museum of Dance is co-hosting this event with the Ndakinna Education Center.
“Celebrating all heritages and cultures is one of the missions of the museum, and being able to bring authentic Native American culture and dance to our visitors and community is very exciting and something we’re very proud to be a part of,” said Raul Martinez, museum director.
The festival will feature a traditional opening by Sakokwenionkwas/Tom Porter, the Mohawk Elder who founded the Kanatsdio-hareke community, and will include performances by the Haudenosaunee Singers and Dancers from the Onondaga Nation, music by Kontiwennahawi, the multiple award-winning Akwesasne Women Singers, and the Black Hawk Singers, an Abenaki Drum group that seeks through its songs to keep their native language and culture alive, as well as Mohawk flute player Al Cleveland.
Activities taking place in the Riggi Theater include
storytelling by internationally-presenters including Perry Ground, Kay Ionataie was Olan, and the father and son storytellers Joseph, James and Jesse Bruchac. A full schedule of events will be available at the festival.
