Blue Streaks girls win thriller

SARATOGA » Saratoga Springs’ varsity girls volleyball team won a five-set thriller over Shaker 25-22, 16-25, 20-25, 25-18, 25-20 Tuesday.

Goldie Hellman led the Blue Streaks with seven aces and seven kills as teammate Grace Schmidt had two aces, five kills and one block and Kara Vamalis added four aces and nine kills.

Shaker’s Samantha Hardwick tallied a game-high 12 kills and 15 digs while teammate Hannah Malicki finished with 22 assists, 15 digs and four aces. eight digs and Jenna Miller added four kills and eight aces. GUILDERLAN­D 3, COLUMBIA1» The Dutchmen beat the Blue Devils 25-16, 2325, 25-15, 25-23 in a Suburban Council match. Nicole McGrath had seven kills, eight digs 14 service points and two aces for Guilderlan­d (1-1). Emily Powell recorded 10 kills, 11 digs for Columbia (0-2) in defeat. BETHLEHEM 3, COLONIE 0 » The Eagles swept the Raiders 25-19, 25-16, 2521. Maddie Rutnik had seven aces, seven assists for Bethlehem while Molly Kirby added four aces and Julie Okoniewski finished with five kills and one ace. Ciana Phillips and Jenny Mueller had four kills apiece for Colonie in defeat. BALLSTON SPA 3, ALBANY 0» Ballston Spa girls volleyball beat Albany 3-0 on Tuesday 25-8, 25-11 and 2516. For the Scotties, Megan McMahon had 13 service points, Lauren Kersch had 22 assists, while Riley O’Donnell had eight service receptions and three aces. R-C-S 3, WATERVLIET 0 » Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk (2-1) earned a sweep 25-6, 25-8, 25-12. The team effort was led by Meghan Borger’s six aces and Grace Bullard’s nine aces.

SHAKER 0, SARATOGA SPRINGS 0 (2 OT) » Shaker and Saratoga battled to a 0-0 draw in a game that included a lightening delay and double overtime. Aidan O’Malley led Saratoga in a dominant first half that had Shaker on its heels, but a few great saves by Keegan Flaherty in the Blue Bison net kept the Blue Streaks off the board. In the second half Ryan Eagan had a great performanc­e in Shaker’s midfield and helped make the game more even. Saratoga finished with a 17-6 advantage in shots, but Shaker was the closest to winning when Hassan Alfadhil appeared to score in overtime, but the ball crossed the line after the clock hit 0. CBA 4, TROY 1 » Keegan Vedder converted a penalty in the 35th minute to open the scoring and added an assist for the Brothers in a win over the Flying Horses. Brady Van Epps finished with two goals and Eli D’Onofrio had one for CBA. SHENENDEHO­WA 2, BURNT HILLS-BALLSTON LAKE 0 » The Plainsmen scored once in each half to earn all the points against the Spartans. Reggie Durden finished a ball by Noah Faro to open the scoring while Nick Evans added an unassisted goal for Shen. Kyle Mercier had a match-high 11 goals for Burnt Hills while Greg Monroe made two saves for Shen. SCHUYLERVI­LLE 5, MECHANICVI­LLE 3 » Mike Lanfear scored two goals and added two assists and Black Horses teammates Christian Petralia, Jared Gregorek and Matt McCarthy also scored.

Jeff Luce, Drew Murphy and Kevin Charette each found the back of the net for the Red Raiders (2-0, 2-1) in a non-league contest at Schuylervi­lle. CHATHAM 5, HOOSICK FALLS 1» Patrick Devine scored four goals for Chatham and Curtis Buchan had the other. The Hoosick Falls goal was scored by David Everard. Hoosick Falls keeper Cody Hodges finished the game with eight saves and Chatham keeper Josh Madsen ended the game with 4 saves. TAMARAC 4, HOOSICK FALLS 0» Chase Ali scored two goals, Riley Hisert added a goal and an asisst and Jack Mulligan completed the scoring for Tamarac.

SCHUYLERVI­LLE 8, GLENS FALLS 0 » Emily Vallee recorded her second “Natural Hat Trick” (3 in a row, then added a 4th in the second half), in a span of less than five minutes to close out the first half. Amy Moreau added two goals, and an assist. Cassie Patrick, Brooke Keefer, and Jenna Watson all had multiple point games, with Watson recording her first varsity goal. Schuylervi­lle improves to 3-0 in Foothills Council and overall while Glens Falls dropped to 0-3. SHENENDEHO­WA 1, NISKAYUNA 0 (CALLED AT HALF) » Sarah Monroe scored off an assist from Ava Sullivan to put the Plainsmen up before the field was deemed unplayable after halftime. Kelsey Kohler made seven saves for Shen while Niskayuna keeper Morgan Kelleher had five saves.

CAPITAL DISTRICT TEAM WINS TOURNEY » The Upstate Academy Gamers 14U softball team won the American Softball Associatio­n Class A Softball Champinshi­ps in a tournament in Stratford, Conn. The team of champs were Michaela Arcate, Abigail Campbell, Lexi Davis, Paige Davis, Ana Gold, Abigail Farnan, Julia Russell, Alison Sgambati, Caroline Srokowski, and Paige Witalec with the bat girl Molly Campbell. The squad was coached by Eric Gold and assisted by Jason Davis, Jim Russell, Matt Sgambati, Erik Srokowski, and Greg Witalec.

The UA Gamers played ten games over four days. Five games, including an extra Internatio­nal TieBreaker inning in the championsh­ip game, were played on the August 6 to earn the Championsh­ip.
