9⁄11 PRESENTATION: A program on “Emergency Communications After the Twin Tower Attacks” is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11 in the Fellowship Hall of the First United Methodist Church, 610 Chapel St. in Schenectady.The event is hosted by the Schenectady Amateur Radio Association. Speaker Tony Pazzola will give a first-hand, eyewitness account of emergency communications in the New York City area in the wake of the 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center buildings. Club members will also discuss a recent field day including drone footage.
9⁄11 REMEMBRANCE: The City of Saratoga Springs invites the community to a 9⁄11 Remembrance Ceremony at High Rock Park on Monday September 11. The ceremony, hosted by Mayor Joanne Yepsen, will be held at the Tempered by Memory sculpture at 8:30 a.m. Comprised of five pieces of twisted steel from the 2001 terrorist attacks, the Tempered by Memory sculpture was created by Noah Savitz in collaboration with John Van Alstine. The observance begins with a color guard from the SSPD and SSFD, which will enter under the direction of John Betor Lt. Colonel (ret), Assistant Fire Chief (ret). A moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. will symbolize when the first plane hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. The National Anthem and other music will be provided by Saratoga Springs High School Choraliers. The keynote speech will be delivered by Jim Pabis, US Army Colonel. A display of original photographs by Lawrence White will also be available for viewing in the park. BOOKBOUND: The First Baptist Church of Ballston Spa invites the public to its book club, BookBound, to discuss Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale.” The group meets on the second Monday of each month, 4:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 202 Milton Ave. Ballston Spa.

INTERFAITH STORY CIRCLE: September 11 is a date seared into the memory of most Americans. The Interfaith Story Circle chooses to launch its 25th anniversary season on this date to make it a time for healing, care and comfort. The guest storyteller is Rev. Dr. Harlan Ratmeyer, pastor of the First Reformed Church of Bethlehem and Association of Clinical Pastoral Education Supervisor (ACPE) and Chaplain at Albany Medical Center. NEW YORK STATE MUSEUM: The New York State Museum is typically closed on Mondays but will be open to the public on Monday, September 11, from 9:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. to accommodate visitors to the museum’s September 11 exhibition, “The World Trade Center: Rescue, Recovery, Response.” A guided tour of the exhibition will be held at noon. JAPANESE KNOTWEED: Japanese knotweed, also known as Adirondack bamboo, is a highly invasive, nonnative plant that is growing throughout Saratoga County. It is very difficult to eliminate and it can be quite destructive, growing underground, even sometimes growing up through driveways, or foundations. Cutting it down, pulling it out or mowing it can spread it. It is distinctive and easy to identify as it is flowering this month, and this is the best time of year to manage it. A discussion about Japanese knotweed is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, September 12, at Room 280 in Bolton Hall at Skidmore College. An official from PRISM (Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management ) will lead the presentation.

SPA CITY’S NEFARIOUS PAST: Despite its reputation as a world-class resort destination for the rich and famous, Saratoga Springs has always had a nefarious past — one dominated by gambling, crime and corruption. On Tuesday, September 12 at 1 p.m., Saratoga Springs City Police Chief Greg Veitch will talk about the city’s darker side at The Summit at Saratoga. His new book, “All the Law in the World Won’t Stop Them,” tells how illegal gambling and organized crime dominated the resort community for much of its history. TROUT STREAM MANAGEMENT: Public meetings will be held in each Department of Environmental Conservation region this fall to provide an overview of the state’s approach to trout stream management and elicit feedback from trout stream anglers on their preferences and expectations for the management of these waters. WILDLIFE WEDNESDAY WALK: Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site hosts environmental educator George Steele for a Wildlife Wednesday bird walk program on September 13 at 6:30 p.m. This walk will explore different areas of the historic site around the Visitor Center while watching and listening for various bird species during their autumn migration. The walk will take place along the banks of Schoharie Creek and on historic site trails, formerly the towpath for the Erie Canal. The program will meet outside the Visitor Center at 129 Schoharie Street, Fort Hunter. There is no charge, but donations are always appreciated.
