SARATOGIAN MAKES ROUNDS IN FRANCE

- — Kevin Gilbert

Copies of The Saratogian are starting to circulate in France as local soldiers stationed in Europe share precious back issues that are still news to them.

Earlier this week, Corporal Harry Berkowitz reported receiving a July issue of the local paper at his headquarters “Somewhere in France.” He relayed it to Corporal Samuel J. Smith of Ordinance Depot No. 6, who confirmed receipt in a letter shared with The Saratogian by his correspondent, an anonymous “young woman friend.”

“One other day I received a card from Harry Berkowitz and later he sent me a copy of The Saratogian of some date in July,” Smith writes, “It looked good to me.

“I am looking every day for a batch of Saratogians, but am beginning to lose hope,” Smith adds, but it’s unclear whether he means newspapers of letters from friends and loved ones. He tells his woman friend, “You need not worry about what the censor thinks of your letters for he does not read them.”

WCTU. The Saratoga chapter of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union elects Ida H. Read its president at the annual meeting held today at the Saratoga Casino.

The WCTU is a dedicated to the prohibition of alcoholic beverages throughout the United States. This year, local chapters are devoting much of their attention to New York State’s upcoming women’s suffrage referendum.

Guest speaker Adella Potter tells the gathering that “while there are still a few ‘conscientious objectors’ to woman suffrage, nearly all the opposition comes from the liquor interests and corrupt politicians, who fear the effects of women’s votes.”
