A new historic marker recognizing the contributions of Philip Schuyler to the Champlain Canal has been erected in Schuylerville.

The sign says that Schuyler advocated for the canal’s construction in 1792, more than 30 years before it was built, in 1823.

The marker was made possible by a $1,050 donation from The William G. Pomeroy Foundation of Syracuse.

“The location is important because it marks the Schuyler Family Farm and the trailhead for our new Sword Surrender March Trail,” town of Saratoga Supervisor Thomas Wood said.

The Sword Surrender March Trail is an ongoing project to develop a 1.2 mile section of the old Champlain Canal towpath into a multi-use trail. The trail section, which runs parallel with Route 4 south of Schuyler House, begins next to the Battles of Saratoga Sword Surrender site and ends 1.2 miles south near Garnsey’s Lane.

Philip Schuyler was a major general in the American Continental army and a United States senator from New York. He was one of the richest men in New York during his time. Much of his money was made at his estate in Saratoga.

Today, the Schuyler house is part of the Saratoga National Historical Park.

Because of the hit Broadway show, “Hamilton,” there has been a resurgence in interest in the Schuyler family in recent years.

The Pomeroy Foundation launched its Historic Roadside Marker Program in 2012. This is the second marker the town has been awarded.
