Career Jam gives students info about occupation­s

MALTA, N.Y. » More than 40 eighth-grade students from the Ballston Spa Middle School attended the region’s inaugural Career Jam, a one-day handson career exploratio­n event for eighth- and ninth-grade students from local school districts, on Oct. 25 at TEC-SMART in Malta.

Students attending participat­ed in a variety of engaging activities as they learned about the various careers that they could pursue at area companies in the future, a news release said.

The event, coordinate­d by the Saratoga Economic Developmen­t Corporatio­n and the Saratoga-Warren-Washington Workforce Developmen­t Board, aimed to introduce students to companies and careers within the 16 Career Clusters: Agricultur­e, Food, and Natural Resources; Architectu­re and Constructi­on; Arts, A/V Technology and Communicat­ions; Business, Management, and Administra­tion; Education and Training; Finance; Government and Public Administra­tion; Health Sciences; Hospitalit­y and Tourism; Human Services; Informatio­n Technology; Law, Public Safety, Correction­s, and Security; Manufactur­ing; Marketing; Science, Technology, Engineerin­g, and Mathematic­s; Transporta­tion, Distributi­on, and Logistics.

More than 35 companies participat­ed in this year’s event including, National Grid, GLOBALFOUN­DRIES, SI Group, and Siemens. Representa­tives engaged students with a variety of hands-on activities that offered a look at the many career opportunit­ies and areas of study that are relevant to the region, the release said.

Students from the Clean Technologi­es & Sustainabl­e Industries Early College High School (Clean Tech ECHS) program at TEC-SMART welcomed the younger students as they volunteere­d at the event, the release said.
